Matthew Mills - SIGNED

by UpNorth » 03 Aug 2009 08:09

Mirror says we are planning a £2m bid for Doncaster's Matt Mills.

Reading bid £2m for a defender!

I would be somewhat surprised if true.

Perhaps feasible if it's contingent on Bikey being sold first.

IMHO opinion this would be a great signing, however if we can't stretch to £1.8m for a striker, this is surely boll0x

I hope this is true as he is very good player. But I think the difference with the tommy smith rumour is that hes 29 and in his last year of contract, so 1.8 million would be a an unrealistic price from reading's point of view.

Eh?

(1) It's a natural extension of the message emanating from the club this summer and as such, hardly "doom and gloom".
(2) What doom and gloom outlook - care to show some examples?

...especially as the "Sign up to hear transfer news" gubbins has been loaded onto the OS.

I'd be pleased and disappointed if we bought him - pleased because he's a good defender, disappointed because only last week I added him to my Fantasy League side, and it would mean I have four Royals and you're only allowed three from any one team. :(

I can't seee it happening, though - surely if we are wrapping something up today, we wouldn't be planning another bid in the same position?

think ill retreat in the face of such a fervent defence, as my post was based on not very much.............

i will just say that nothing coming from the club says to me we have to sell anyone else to buy anyone, and rodgers has been going on about two players still to come in,personally i thought it looked as if doyle and hunt out would be it, and we'd have 1-2 million to spend on replacement players, so its at least feasible IMO

I wouldnt be against Dervitte signing on loan TBH, though i would be slightly concerned we would have an fairly inexperienced CB pairing given that Ivar is still injured and Bikey is suspended. Mills at 23 is the right age. Exceed my expectations by signing Nugent with Hunt going the other way and i would be pretty happy with the way our squad is shaping up!

On reflection, I'm actually not so sure that Bikey would need to be sold first, however if we do spend a lot on a central defender I believe we would be actively seeking buyers for Bikey and I would be surprised to see him still around in September.

That's something I can agree with. 4 centrebacks and a "midfielder" who has arguably played his most impressive games in defence would seem a lot at this level. A loan would make most sense if we want to keep Ivar and Bikey long term. Although I'm not sure how long Ivar's contract has left, so maybe this is forward planning for Ivar leaving next summer.

Not so much can't, as won't. Surely.

And maybe, just maybe, Reading have a value they put on potential signings, which they won't ignore just because some bunch of Northern Monkeys decide to offer double what that value is.

Just because they won't bid £2 million for 'X' doesn't mean they won't bid £2 million for 'Y'.

Or perhaps becuase the season hasn't started I haven't had quite all the positivity knocked out of me yet.

Strangely I got sent a text from a 'source' about this guy joining us first thing this morning. Didn't believe it myself however they have good record of reporting things although they have limited football knowledge.

I'm assuming they heard the rumor and reported it to me as fact, but hey maybe there is more in this one!
