Worst half since Bristol Rovers scored 6!?

by Compo's Hat » 22 Sep 2009 01:09

I've been thinking long and hard and i can't think of a half of football that bad in just over ten years. Yes, there were some pants performances back under the Burns era as well as the start of Pardrew's but that was over the ninety minute period and unlike Saturday and Bristol Rovers 2nd half demolition where we just didn't turn up and were a completely different side!

Those who are thinking about the scoring being like at Hillsborough a few years back should note that we were nowhere near as bad as that perforance on Saturday.

Anyone disagree?

We went into HT at the Bristol Rovers game at 0-0 too..

Which half-time team talk was the worst? That one or Saturdays?

The strange thing is that although we were dire on Saturday we still did have some decent chances going forward - for instance Kebe went close with a header from a corner right at the very end. So it was more in defence and midfield - and lack of organisation - that we were useless on Saturday rather than the whole performance being completely rubbish.

As a worse performance I'll suggest the FA Cup matches, (including replay) vs Walsall in Jan 2003, when in 210 minutes of football we couldn't score once, needed an own goal to stay in the tie, and then could only score 1 from a whole penalty shoot-out. Every player was absolutely dire then.

I seem to recall losing 2-1 to Bury about 7 years ago on a rainy day in a half filled MadStad, the second half being absolutely woeful.

That was dump but nowhere near as dump as Saturday.

Second half against Sheff Utd this season was not much to write home about. One positive to take is that we have to search long and hard for such a capitulation which goes to show just HOW SUCCESSFUL WE HAVE BEEN!

Where does the Portsmouth 7-4 Reading game fit into all of this? Either half = sh*tness factor 20.

Seem to remember losing to Chesterfield 1-0 at the Mad Stad... think Jamie Ashdown made his debut so maybe 2001/2002? Just remember sitting there stupidifed. Also when Millwall came down for a top of the table clash and smashed us first half 3 or 4-0 though we did come back towards the end.

The second half against Burnley last year felt so dire too

Noel Hunt actually had a very good chance at the end which the keeper did well to keep out - I thought he's score. It was a poor half but there are countless examples of halves where we've not even got near the opposition goal. The Walsall away wasn't too bad, just freezing. Butler hit the post I believe.

One that sticks in my mind for being LOLaughably bad (as in I did actually LOL) was when we lost 3-0 at home to Wimbledon who I believe were bottom of the table at the time. The players looked like they'd never even seen a football before - at one point Ingarmarsson controlled a long ball on his chest and then smashed it into Row AA under no pressure at all. Absolutely bewildering.

Getting beat 2-4 at Charlton last season showed woeful defending, though, once again, the attacking wasn't bad.

Anyone who thinks the crowd do not influence games should have been at that game at Hillsborough in 2003. We played them off the park in the first half, 2-0 up, and without the incredible Wednesday support in the second period would have gone on to win easily.
I have said it before but Wednesday supporters are the best in the country.

That game was by a long chalk the worst I have ever seen and I include Sunday morning pub games in that.
Last Saturday before Christmas I think against one of the worst sides ever to appear in the Championship.
If anyone was at both that and Peterboro on Saturday and tell me we were worse against The Posh then I am genuinely worried

Tbf, no we weren't. That Wimbledon game was the lowest ebb. Posh was bad, but not that bad.

Not too fussed by the Bristol 2nd half. It ended up so ridiculous I couldn't help but laugh. It just wasn't really real.

Au contraire mon amis, it was most assuredly really REAL, like finishing in the bottom three WILL get you relegated, no matter how plausible the reasons or excuses are! Tell me you think it's impossible for that to happen to Reading this season?

At this moment in time, relegation is a very real possibility. We have a nightmare game on Saturday and we all know that the atmos from the away end will be akin to that at Filbert Street in 1995.

Our next 6 games are not ones of choice based on the start to the season that we have had. The sphincter is starting to tighten.
