Optimism...keep the faith!

by Mr Irascible » 19 Oct 2009 21:53

This is not a post about the merits of the team or the manager but one about how we all think the results might have been expected to go...in all honesty! I am trying to be objective, look at how the teams we have played have fared to date and also see what are our up and coming fixtures.

Nottm Forest - Draw - stalemate as Forest shut up shop in season's opener - 1 from 3
Newcastle - Lost - Reading beaten by a better team down from Premiership - 1 from 6
Swansea - Draw - stalemate as Reading shut up shop - 2 from 9
Sheff U - Draw - two teams of comparable ability cancel one another out - 3 from 12
Barnsley - Win - Reading prove too strong - 6 from 15
Doncaster - Win - Good away win 9 from 18
Cardiff - Lost - odd goal win by in form team - 9 from 21
Peterborough - Draw - Good battling performance - 10 from 24
Watford - Draw - Usual result of two teams that know one another well - 11 from 27
Preston - Draw - good result at in form team - 12 from 30
Middlesbrough - Lost - Defeat by in form team down from Premiership - 12 from 33
West Brom - Lost - Defeat by in form team down from Premiership - 12 from 36

I think we are about 2 points behind where we should be based on a changed, young team. It has been a tough start playing 6 of the top 7. Games can we won or lost early in the season but if we can get in some semblance of form then....

Coming up...

QPR - Draw - Tough battle - 13 from 39
Leicester - Win - Odd goal - 16 from 42
Coventry - Win - Beatable team - 19 from 48
Blackpool - Win - team not good on travels - 22 from 51
Derby - Win - 25 from 54
Sheff Wed - Draw - 26 from 57
Crystal Palace - Win 29 from 60
Scunthorpe - Win - 32 from 63
Bristol City - Lost - 32 from 66
Swansea - Win - 35 from 69
Plymouth - Win - against rank bottom - 38 from 72

We could be moving up the table and in a good position by New Year?

Keep the faith....URZ!!!!!

you better get back on your medication

in another 4 weeks we'll have another load of would have, could have, should have threads about how, with just a little bit of luck, we could have had all those points

Three wins in a row in the next four games? No chance.

Would love to believe in all that.

Am off to the Leicester game (my first home game of the season) but I really am not very enthusiastic about it.

Hope we get something tomorrow...

I'd feel more optimistic if there was any discernable sign of progress, but there isn't.

When Rodgers started I think we all anticipated some difficult results as our young team found its feet but we hope that, with time, the team would gel and results would improve. That's not what's happened at all.

Instead, we have few youngsters playing having been replaced by jobbing championship journeymen, there is no continuity whatsoever in team or tactic selection so, by no means, can we be said to be heading in the right direction or seeing light at the end of the tunnel. We are stuck at square one and I don't see any likelihood of moving forward.

Under Pardew, or dismal run ended with the appointment of Mad Dog, I wonder if it's going to need something similar here to kick start things.

In the meantime, i'd revert to 4-4-2 week in week out with as unchanged a side as possible to try and get atoehold to build from.

thought the signs of progress were there before he shipped out the yoof, and started playing hoofball with added cloggers

I think the results should have been more this:

Forest - a more committed attempt to win rather than practice passing brings 3 points
Newcastle - beaten by a better side, I thought Newcastle would start badly and we'd have a chance. I was wrong. 0 points
Swansea - I though Swansea would be better than they were and a draw would be a good result, as it turns out they were shit, but so we were we. 1 point
Sheffield U - We're they're bogey team but this was never going to be a winner 0 points
Barnsley - 3 points
Doncaster - a solid team hard to break down 1 Point
Cardiff - a side with quality strikers we'd always struggle against 0 points
P'boro - a decent side but struggling lacking that little extra quality. We could and should have beaten them 3 points
Watford - always going to be out for vengeance a draw was a good result but one we were capable of 1 Point
Preston - should have been beaten comfortably really 0 Points
M'boro - see above 0 Points
West Brom - and again 0 Points
QPR - and again 0 Points
Leicester - I think we needed to win this, but under different circumstances a draw might have been reasonable 1 Point

Wow, that puts us on 13, only three points better off than we are. It's that killer run of [Preston], M'boro, West Brom and QPR that has come at a really bad time for us.
