LOOKING FOR BLAME, LOOK NO FURTHER!

by runrunrunrungilksey » 28 Oct 2009 19:36

The blame on the clubs current high profile status must lay firmly in the hands of the “fans” who protested in a parking space designed to persuade Steve Coppell to stay in his job following our relegation from the Premier League. Without this protest and even with the pleading of Sir Madskint , it was highly probable that he would have walked away from the club, insisting on the fact that he had “taken the club as far as he could” however Coppell was persuaded to stay, not by the chairman or board of directors, but by the “almost” hundreds and hundreds of fans.

They must have been so pleased with themselves; they made some pro Coppell banners, turned a piece of concrete into a shrine, chanted his name for a couple of hours and even made it onto the local radio. However, I believe very strongly, it was those fateful couple of hours that have been the real reason as to why we are where we are!

It would have been better for both club and manager to part company then rather than a season later, leaving the club and in particular the “faithful Reading fans” with broken dreams of no promotion and then a host of top named players leaving the club due to ambitions moving in different directions and Sir Madskints strict policy on wage caps within the club, after all a chairman who wants to sell a business should be interested in having zero debt in the books regardless of the fans feelings.

If the chairman and manager had parted company at the point of the clubs relegation, it would have sparked a new interest in the club with a host of managers, tried and tested ones, banging on Sir Madskint door. With RFC recently releasing their financial details, it was clear that they were prepared to keep their star players, Doyle, Hunt, Bikey & eventually Kitson to name a few to have one last shot at getting back to the big time. With Coppell deciding to stay the players even brought on to the idea that Reading would go straight back up! It is at this point the final nail in the coffin was firmly banged in!

The players needed freshening up with new idea’s and new beliefs coming in on the pitch and around the training ground and I’m afraid to say, keeping Coppell at the club didn’t spark any new enthusiasm, nor did it provoke any reaction for the clubs “seasoned” premier league stars. If anything, it brought them a guaranteed starting place in Coppell’s plans knowing that the failure of promotion would give them an exit from the club come what May.

If Coppell had decided to go and the players had decided that without Coppell they would go too, it would have left the club with a new manager (probably one that was capable and with promotion experience, perhaps someone like Alan Curbishley), with the funds for transfers and new players looking to prove themselves at a club with one main aim in the season - promotion at all costs!

Doyle, Hunt & co didn’t live up to their previous billing in the league and towards the end of the campaign, perhaps like the manager, had already decided that this was going to be their last season at the club. I mean why would they want to fight for promotion when things got tough in the league, I’ll tell you why – the club had already given them a golden ticket out of the championship by offering them an out if promotion failed!

If you ask me it was because the manager was already in the USA watching his son play golf, he was already on the continent scouting coaching routines for his next job in football.

Fans of the parking space protest you have a lot to answer for!

Don't be daft. Since when has SJM gone for the expensive option? He has only ever splashed the loan when it became crystal clear that there was no alternative.

What we will never know is what would have happened last season with a different manager. One thing for sure is that we would not be in the current predicament. The manager would have had a season or so to put together some sort of plan if we had not got promotion to cater for the loss of personnel. Instead, we have a rookie manager, a rookie coach and a rookie squad.

Top post, although I don't agree we'd have gone promotion at all costs, it would again been a rather tentative start to a new seaosn with a new manager to achieve promotion probably in his 2nd year and certainly by the end of the third.

But Madejski didn't like it when we were in the Prem - he doesn't like the "obscene wages".

Which must explain why he lives so close to the breadline.

You've got that a bit twisted TB. Mr Mad is fine and lovely when HE'S the one with the money, he just doesn't like others to have it for a job he doesn't consider worth what he has to pay.

It was all very well and good when he could employ hundreds of staff at AutoTrader on wages of next to nothing, whilst he himself was able to sell his stake for £200M, earnt on the backs of others who were paid shite. But when a few hairy arsed footballers, footballers for God's sake, have the temerity to want the going rate for their trade, then whoooa ... hold on ... that's obscene!! Seems exploitation is only acceptabel one way with Madejski.

Sorry TB - Madejski is no different to the vast majority of the rich. The rich donlt get rich by throwing their money around willy nilly.

Anyway, back onto the thread - had Coppell left at the end of the PL relegation season, we would simply have seen this season's asset strip taken place a year earlier. On the plus side, we wouldn't have the Bodger as our manager, it would probably have been Dill or Wally moved up, although by now we would have been in mid table mediocrity - in League 1.

Agree Strap. Coppell's staying for another season staved off a relegation battle until this time around.

Don't get into the mindset that the present situation is or was inevitable. It was highly avoidable both last season and this. There are plenty of teams in this division with less resources than us, who are probably even after our economies paying lower wages than us. We should be able to get out of this mess either with Rodgers or without. Fatalism about relegation is premature.

Good post I spose but I don't think there would have been much of a difference between what's happening now and what could have happened back then as I reckon the exodus would have happened back then too.

Good post. I hope the fans that protested in the car park will have the decency to accept the consequences of their actions and resign.

Once again with the Curbishley. Is there any indication whatsoever that Curbs wants to take over a club in the Championship. Let alone us?

You mean apart from all his talk about being a Premiership manager and that was going to be where he would be going back into management?

He may well have been interested in a short term go at it last season, if Madejski and the players were willing to give it a go like they did last season. Now? With the changes that Rodgers knew were afoot when he took the job? No chance, he'd have been on a hiding to nothing just like Rodgers has been.

It's also the only time we've made money.

The outgoings might have been stupidly high, but the revenue's were even greater. As much as Madejski likes to play on the "obscene wages" etc etc to appease the fans when we might not be spending as much as others, I bet he enjoyed the bottom line a lot more than the previous 15 years!
