Alex Pearce has signed a new #readingfc contract until Summer 2013

Some of the HNA? faithful may not back him, but the club certainly like him.

Expect confirmation tomorrow morning.

If he can stop running like someone has but 20 pounds of lead in his boots then great

Otherwise, League One/Bottom championship clogger at best.

I really want him to succeed and do well, he's got the Adie Williams factor about him

Pearce would have made McPherson look like Lynford Christie. and Pearce is 20 not 30 FFS!

Pearce runs like the kid who always came last at x country. He only has a future at Reading if we go down.

Like McPherson was ever quick

Like Ingimarsson, Pearce reads the game superbly and is a good organiser although I agree that he does need more experience.

If needed I would have no problem with Pearce playing ahead of Ingimarsson and alongside Mills or Khizanishvili

As is Ingimarsson, Kissmahwilly.

As was Adie Williams, Adie Whitbread, Barry Hunter... all reliable and very good players.

I am glad that he has signed on. Wouldn't play him again this season with Mills being in good form and Kissmawilli being more experienced. From what I have seen of him he hasn't looked that bad

MacPherson slow?

I am sure that my memory is not that bad. The South Bank regularly chanted "You'll never beat MacPherson" because he was quick! Sure, not Gilkles quick but rapid all the same. To suggest that Pearce is of similar pace is, quite frankly, laughable! Now, if someone was to say that he had the pace of Wdowczyk then I would be hard pressed to argue.

Thing is, money is tight. Giving AP a new contract saves the immediate need of looking for, and shelling out a transfer / signing-on fee for a replacement.

We did sing that, but it wasn't for pace. He was a rock, rarely beaten at the back. Never pacey, not from my memory.

Bad move by the club if we have aspirations of the premier league.

A basic immobile defender who can't pass. I will never criticise the bloke for effort, ability to tackle and ability in the air, but the fact HMS Ark Royal could turn him and he will never have that natural ability like Bikey or Dovecheck to make up for it , then the verdict is will never make above this league.

Depends on the level we're at. Promotion challengers in Championship or Premier League, very unlikely. Anything lower then, yes, he is the future for us.

So given our current situation an excellent choice. Why get rid of Pearce when he may very well be good enough for where we are for the next few years. We should be keeping him, but aiming to make future centreback signings to improve on him and move him down the order.

Ivar is a spent force and on the decline, contract runs out at the end of the year and has refused to sign a new one that was offered, so likely to be off. Don't want two going, leaving us with only Mills and Cisse. Shift one out at a time for the next season or so, with better replacements.

He's a capable Championship defender and so it's a good move to tie him down on a new contract. He won't be on massive wages and is a low cost member of the squad, and one that's done ok so why wouldn't we keep him?

Pair him with a defender who compliments his qualities and he'll be fine. Put him without another similar defender, like an aging Ingimarsson and the partnership will struggle a bit. I'm not sure he and Mills are a suitable partnership either, but Pearce still has his value, even if it's as backup to Mills and AN Other next season.

Makes sense to keep him under contract. He can still be allowed to leave if we decide we have better options but keeps us in control.

We do have to look to next season though as if Ivar leaves we would be extremely thin on the ground at centre back (unless you take the comedy route and include Cisse as a long term option).

I think he might be useful if we ever looked at playing 3 CBs in the side which proved successful in 94/95. If we were to play 2, which is the current preference, I would rather have him on car parking duties.

Pearce has been built up a lot this season, mainly by BR, and people in the game seem to rate him a lot higher than we do. A new longer contract just increases his value further, so we can't lose.

...apart from having to pay him for the duration of that contract of course.

I still think that he's worth keeping on and having in the squad, but there is of course a cost associated to that so it's not a no lose situation.
