Robin Friday's memorial tree

by el_presidente » 04 Jul 2010 11:20

I was wandering through Walpole Park, Ealing the other day when I saw this nice little plaque. I had no idea it was there, I thought it might be of interest. Regards, el_pres

Shame there is not more telling the casual passer buy who Robin was and what a legend he was in these parts.

Was speaking to a Cardiff fan I know and I reminded him that it will 20 years in December since Robin died. I suggested that we should try and get something organised for when the teams meet at the madhouse as he was voted player of millennium at both clubs.

The club probably won't want to know, but it would be great to have a fan organised display of the feelings towards Robin. So lets get the thinking caps on and come up with something either with or without the support of the club.

Nice to find out about the tree next time I'm in Ealing I will pop by and pay my respects to the legend.

It would be a bit shit and corporate if the club did get involved anyway. A fan's tribute would be better.

Perhaps we could get Mark Lawrenson involved?

It's towards the southern end of the park if I recall correctly (or the Walpole Park South Bank if you will ...)

I suggested this to STAR a few months back to try and get something organised either around the 20th anniversary or when the two clubs met.

The tree is situated at the Culmington Gardens side of Walpole Park just inside the gate (opposite side from the main Uxbridge Rd). I think the tree was probably planted by Robin's family under Ealing Council's Tree Sponsorship scheme which ran for a few years after the storm of 1987 which destroyed a lot of trees.

I actually think it's nice that it is a purely personal, family memorial to him as a person. He wasn't a decent footballer with an appalling off the field life. He was a son / father / husband.

Agree that a fan inspired marking of his death at the Cardiff game would be good. Would be great to have a big banner with his face on passed right round the ground - home and away fans....

Do a fans game or something, with a raffle, barbecue etc and hopefully some memorabillia from both clubs then put all the proceeds to a charity of Robin's families choice.

Up for a donation to a banner for this, £10 from me, if anyone gets it going?????

Needs to have him in a mixed kit, or two pics IMHO.

One gameI intend to attend this season as it is midweek.

I met his wife (mother of the girl who can often be seen at football) in the Forresters Arms a few weeks back. They have a bit called Fridays Bar in there and I got chatting to her about Robin Friday. Lovely lady! And a bit of a GILF, if i do say.

Excuse my ignorance, but why is the tree all the way out in Ealing? Is that just where his family were living at the time? Seems a bit of a random location.

He just played football for us, he wasn't a local !!
He was from the Acton/ Ealing area and came to our attention when playing for Hayes. I believe his ashes are interred at Ealing Crematorium (?)
