Favourite season opener of recent times?

by Big Foot » 01 Aug 2010 22:41

3-2 vs Middlesbrough will obviously stand out in people's minds and will go down in the history of RFC as a fantastic moment for the club arriving on the PL stage. However, Brighton at home August 2004, another 3-2 match...can still remember their striker slotting the ball home after (I think) a deflected clearance fell to him and every looking beleagured at them taking the lead.

Fast forward a minute or so and Kitson smashing the ball home to shut up the Brighton fans, then remember Forster scoring the 3rd for us by charging down a defender and burying it when clean through, the kind of situation when Forster was at his best.

Any others to wet the whistle ahead of Saturday's scorching showdown with Scunthorpe?

'boro's a good shout, but actually the season before that, the home defeat to Plymouth is brilliant. At the time, it was a proper eye-rolling 'here we go again' jobby.

Little did we know, eh?!

Wolves away in 1994 - lost 1-0 but completely hammered them, we (ie Quinn) must have missed about five gilt-edged chances. I've never felt so calm after losing. Having been a bit nervous about staying up before the season started, I knew we'd be OK after that.

Forest 3-0 home win can't remember what year. Scott Murray had a blinder on the right and I think I can remember goater scored?

Reading Vs Bristol City 1999/2000, City bring a full travelling support for their cup final, Gerard Lavin is sent-off for deliberately kicking the ball at Reading fans, we steal a late winner thanks to Jimmy Crawford.

Beat me to it...

But anyway, yes Murray and Goater both scored as well as Sidwell (volley from a corner, albeit deflected)

It's ALL about Kevin Watson's assist for Scott Murray's goal, what a pass that was if others can remember it too - I left that game convinced we'd walk the league before Pardew walked out on us

As it goes Ipswich away wasn't too bad, cheated out of all 3 points by Jim Magilton diving over Steve Brown's tackle in the 93rd minute

Great shout. We absolutely played them off the park and despite the loss, I was absolutely buzzing on the way back to the car. Dariusz was class personified; Quinn would have had a hat-trick on a better day. Driving back down the M5, I thought we were on the cusp of something very special.

Easy one for me - Huddersfield (A) 93/94 season. For those of you too young to know, Huddersfield had spent big in the summer (a certain Steve Francis made his way up there). RFC had a good secod half to 92/93 - sound familiar - and absolutely demolished them 3-0 with a peformance which probably defined the rest of the season.

Can't have been more than 100 Loyal Royals up for the trip either.

0-0 away to Man Utd surely?

Heroic rearguard action and 400 or so ecstatic Reading fans surrounded by 72,000 fuming gloryhunters.

The top 3 for me in no particular order come from matches already mentioned above. Fo one reason or another, I only managed to see one of the three but they are:

Home to Middlesbrough 2006/07
Away to Wolves 1994/95
Away to Huddersfield 1993/94

Yep - Watson came on and completely changed the game - remember well looking across at the sun-drenched East Stand which was virtually full of people in blue and white and, as we were completely outplaying the team that was European Champions when I was a lad, thinking "is this really Reading?"

Something clicked that day and I thought we were on the edge of something stunning. That was 16th August 2003, and within 2 weeks of that game Pardew was on his way to West Ham and the Reading revolution was put back a couple of years.
