Dirk Gently There's no case to be made for subsidising/rewarding "regular" travellers for all the reasons stated.

But there is a case to be made for subsidising/sponsoring transport to ensure that the support at what will probably be a very important away match is as large as possible, considering the circumstances.

It would make more sense to subsidise / sponsor the match tickets.

That way you include everyone.

By only addressing the transport you exclude all those who might want to go but
- aren't STAR members
- plan to travel with others who aren't STAR members
- don't live in Reading
- only want to make the trip one way
- don't want to travel by coach
- can't make the coach departure time
- want to leave earlier than the coach and make a day of it

So how about the match tickets are all subsidised by a tenner and people make their own transport arrangements to suit themselves ?

Agreed, but as it's Norwich who get the ticket revenue that's unlikely to happen.

That should be irrelevant if the desire is to maximise the number of travelling fans.

I understand that STAR could run the coaches at cost / a loss without needing any support from the club but if the club felt having a lot of fans there was of significant benefit they could make a real gesture to maximise the numbers, which would have to look at tickets rather than travel.

The team coaches were subsidised for one game last season as a good will gesture from the club. That is possible, though as with last time a certain limit on ticket subsidies would have to be agreed.

Reading Football Club and the supporters' Trust At Reading (star) have teamed up to offer free coach travel to Royals Supporters to the final away game of the season at Norwich on Monday 27th April.
Chief Executive Nigel Howe Explained "we want to make sure tthe highest possible number of Reading fans are able to attend this potentially crucial game, so we're delighted to work with STAR to offer travel.
"We realise that the game being moved to monday night is inconvenient for supporters, and we wanted to do something to help them out"

Well done to the management for offering free travel to Reading supporters to this game. First time that I can recall this being done.

All details are on the item on the STAR website, here, including the terms and conditions of this - without them RFC and STAR would effectively be writing a "blank cheque."

These are copyied here for reference, though:

Terms and Conditions:
· Priority for free travel will be given to existing STAR members, who have until Tuesday 14th April to book coach tickets for this free travel. After this date we will accept new membership applications for current non-members wanting to take up this offer.
· At the time of booking, we will ask for a £5 deposit – this will be refunded on the coaches en route to Norwich, and is a safeguard against “no-shows” who might book a seat and not use it, thus depriving another supporters of that seat.
· The number of coaches available is limited by availability of drivers etc on what is a school night, and so tickets will be “sold” on a strictly first come, first served basis, with limited availability.

At the moment we definitely have 4 coaches secured (which might not seem a lot but it is double what we've been taking to away matches this season!). Once theose are full we'll have to see, but definitely no promises here as there are all sorts of factors to take into account - not least that evening matches are difficult at short notice because of the number of drivers who are committed to school transport - because of drivers' hours regulations this would stop them driving on the Tuesday morning as well a the Monday night.
