BBC Radio Berks Phone In Guest Fri 22 Dec

by BBC Radio Berkshire » 19 Dec 2006 10:44

Dear All,

Just to say that Reading sports scientist John Goodman will be Tim's guest on Friday.

As an ex pro (striker with Watford and Wimbledon) and the man responsible for making the Royals purr like a Bentley engine he's sure to be a good listen.

Funny bloke as well

All the best

Joel

John,
You're a sports scientist. Does that mean you have an ology?

A word of advice.... if you ever find yourself in a squalid Chinese back street boozer and being challenged to either a game of Mahjong, or Chinese Chequers..... opt for the later.

I'd feel much safer, as remarkably, an anagram of your name is DO NO MAHJONG.

Also, stay away from the Russian girls in said Chinese back street boozer

John,

It's your birthday on the 2nd of June so may I be one of the first to wish you a happy 36th birthday.

You share your birthday with 'English Murderer' Peter Sutcliffe.

Did you feel cut up after the Blackburn game?

When I think of Sports scientology I think of big Russian going though the paces in preparation for the epic bout with Rocky Balboa.

All the fancy equipment counted for nothing, the underdog won.

Are you concerned John Madejski may watch this film and come to the same conclusion?

Jon Goodman

"Jon Goodman is the sports fitness instructor for Sporting Chance.

Jon's credentials speak for themselves. He reached the pinnacle of his career at Wimbledon."

Jon,

OK, so that was playing career. Being at the Royals is better than that isn't it?

------------

Despite changes in the laws of the game almost removing all contact between players we seem to see more injuries now than ever before. Is it because today's players are just a bunch of over-paid show ponies?

How do the physical demands of playing top flight football differ 'from your day'?

------------

How can bathing in ice cold water possibly be good for you?

------------

Tell us about your work at Sporting Chance.

Do you work with the RFC academy players at all and do you use that experience to advise them about conduct away from football?

There was an excellent Radio Five Live feature on footballers' addictions which was reviewed by HobNob's Wax Jacket "essentially these guys have far too much free time, don't have the education to occupy effectively this free time, and the clubs do nothing/very little to help, so they fill it by whatever means possible and this isn't always good."

What do RFC do to avoid these problems?

Jon

Red or blue bounties?

Which player is the worst for sticking to diets and any special training?

Are the players generally receptive to new ideas however obscure they maybe and have you ever tried it on a bit by getting them to do something or wear something under the belief it will actually improve them as players or their recovery after games?

If you returned home to find a giraffe eating the contents of your back garden what would you do?

How much do you miss playing or is your current line of work the best thing ever as you can still get involved in the match routine but not have to worry too much about adhering strictly to diets and exercises?

How involved do you get with the buying of players? Do you run an assessment over them as part of their 'medical' or is there a 'grapevine' of sports scientists you can talk to to find out more about new players?

Who is your favourite Goodman; John Goodman, Don Goodman or St Francis of Assisi

Joel, isn't that a bit of an inopportune phrase given the scorer of the winner on Saturday?

Sanchez included you in the Northern Ireland backroom staff as a Conditioning Coach. How do your international duties differ from those at Reading as Sports Scientist?

Do you prefer being in a sitcom like Roseanne or do you prefer movie work?

If your asked you encourage a player with low esteem by telling him he's doing a good job in training when all the science says he's having a stinker would you do as asked or go with the science?

Barry the bird boggler If you returned home to find a giraffe eating the contents of your back garden what would you do?

And if that giraffe were to address you first by saying something along lines of, "No worries, mate. Highballs are on me!" --how do you imagine that you would react? Would you:

A.) Shoot him

B.) Sneak a peek and then shoot him

C.) Instruct him to hurry up and finish his meal and then scram

D.) Meet him down the pub and hold him to his offer

E.) Other, please explain

Cheers.

If you were in France and were asked if you would like some bad marmalade with your croissant would you reply "Non, good jam"

If you did this would be quite remarkable as it is an angram of your name.

You appear to be in quite good shape, do you think this is a pre-requisite for a sports scientist or can you get away with carrying a few extra pounds? Not that I'm suggestign for a second that Niall Clark was anything more than his ideal weight *cough*

When your eldest daughter's face changed while you were making Roseanne how long did it take you to notice?

Do you really believe there is a fat American likely to become King of England if there is some sort of terrible accident while the royal family have their photo taken?

After Xmas, when you test the players will you be able to calculate the exact number of mince pies each one of them has consumed?

Do you think Father Christmas would benefit from having a Sports Scientist on his payroll and if so, Is this a position that may interest you?

Jon, when you arrived at Wimbledon, what did "The Crazy Gang" have in store for you as an initiation?
