How far away can you get BBCRB?

by purleyroyal » 14 Feb 2007 14:05

Apologies if this has been raised before (I did a search but nothing came up)...

I was away from home at the weekend on family visiting duties in Weymouth, and Mrs PR and I stopped off at Kingston Lacey near Wimborne Minster Dorset, around 90 miles away.

Parked in the carpark we listened to the second half of the Villa game without interference although when driving afterwards reception was poor and we couldn't listen to the interviews.

I lose BBCRB when approaching Swindon on the M4 and it's mostly patchy past Streetley, so was very pleased on Saturday.

So, ignoring any smart answers about listening the internet, can anyone else beat this?

I can get BBC Berks FM clearly in Salisbury and Portsmouth but if I try tuning in in Bagshot, about as close to Berks as you can be without actually being in the county, its a problem.

Reception is totally inconsistent around the M25 (between the A3 and M1 junctions) with some areas being great and others just plain impossible to hear due to BBC Southern Counties signal strength seemingly swamping the 104.1 and 104.4 frequencies.

If I sit in my car on my drive in Coleford on match days, I can pick up the games, which is about 90-100 miles away, and on top of a hill!!

This used to be a regular procedure before Broadband Internet and sometimes I can still be found to do this!

On my way home from home games I normally lose Radio Berks somewhere between Swindon and Fairford. I tend to then pick it up all the way home, but normally when at the top of a hill!

I can imagine a bunch of Reading supporters all sat in a random car park on top of a hill in Gloucester listening to the game being mistaken for doggers

 I met a bloke (who lived/lives about 4 miles away from me in a place called Littledean), at Hereford away in the LDV game a few years back, who used to do the same from the next hill across from mine at Cinderford!!

Following the Bagshot theme I find I get poor reception along the back of Ascot Racecourse and between the Peanut Roundabout and Windsor Great Park.

There is also a complete dead spot between Horton and Colnbrook.

Going into Hampshire I have listened to live BBCRB commentary at Fratton Park.

I would venture that's because of the interference from all of the London radio stations - there aren't many radio stations transmitting from the Salisbury area.

You can get it at Hampton Court though, near the green though no good moving too much as it drifts.
