European Bonuses

by comeonthebiscuitmen » 15 May 2007 11:51

Several players have contract clauses that if we had made the UEFA cup would have meant big payouts in bonuses.
thats the real reason why the club weren't keen on europe this season.

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere.

Source?

Seems bizarre to me that a) a newly promoted club with low expectations would be writing UEFA Cup bonus clauses into contracts, and b) that the amount of those bonuses would genuinely be material enough to mean the club 'did not want' to qualify.

So let me get this right - the players purposely failed to get enough points to qualify to Europe this meaning they wouldn't get the payments due to them as part of their contracts?

Footballers may not be the sharpest tools in the box but they're not that blunt.

... and what were they doing at Blackburn last Sunday if it wasn't trying to win?

If Bolton had lost, we would have qualified for Europe even with a draw.

This 'story' is obviously made up by comeonthebiscuitmen.

Where does the idea that 'the club' didn;t want to qualify for Europe come from ?

JM seemed keen, and Coppell warned about the problems whilst still saying they were out to win ever game.

It's a myth !

I wouldn't make it up out of nowhere.

Im not saying players didn't want it. they clearly did and rightly so.
frankly who knows whats in players contracts these days.

But, a bloke at the match on sunday told me this. pure rumour, dont know if its true. perhaps someone on here with 'connections' can shed light on these contracts.

Just how much did West Ham make from their european foray last year? The answer is here
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.j ... nsta14.xml

about 100 grand.

Even Spurs and Blackburn didn't make much. Certainly not enough to justify the increase in cost of squad that would be needed to mount a reasonable challenge.

Players don't renegotiate contracts every year, they have a contract for maybe 4 years so it is no surprise a newly promoted team has these clauses are in the contract. Players and their agents are thinking long term when they sign these things

Better to talk about the bonuses the players made for not getting relegated IMHO. £60k for a player who made no Prem starts I have been told, source a financial advisor.
