Never will we see a celebration to rival the wigan play-off game these days, not with the lack of passion displayed by the modern support.

Given that the playoff game was a sell -out, there must have been a bit of that "modern support" there that night, wouldn't you say?

It was also one of the most passionate crowds we've ever had at the Madejski. Great night that was!!!

There were a lot of people that night who had obviously not been to a reading game for a long time.

Especially the guy who said whos that young kid when Forster came on

Leroy's goal against Boro immediately springs to mind.

The new fans will be mainly children ( who are the future of RFC). I have three kids who are mad Reading fans but could not get to see a game last year. Ticket prices will have to come down though.

Katie Marsden The only trouble will be the 14,000 extra new fans. They won't be proper fans, just new fans who will be fickle and have a poor knowledge of football.

Doesn't that apply to every fan who starts attending football matches? We all started watching Reading at some point and would therefore have been included in your stereotype.

Katie Marsden Great news, full credit to Madejski for refusing to stand still and pushing the club forward.

The only trouble will be the 14,000 extra new fans. They won't be proper fans, just new fans who will be fickle and have a poor knowledge of football. It will mean the club has gone from an average of about 9,000 in 98 to possibly 35,000 in just 10 years.

Has a clubs gates ever risen so dramatically in so few years?

Probably not. But have many clubs risen through the ranks and moved ground over so few years.

Since 97, we've moved from a ground that could only hold 15,000 to one that holds 24,000. During the last ten years we've seen success unparallelled in the history of this club and that has brought back fans that used to attend and won us new ones.

We've a history of taking big crowds to big games (40,000 odd for the two play-off finals and Simod Cup) so as a town the support is there even if just fairweather. The difference now is that we finally have the ability to accomodate them at the stadium.

Warfield Royal Planning consent granted

Reading Borough Council have given the go ahead to the Club's plans to increase the capacity of Madejski Stadium to around 38,000.

The plans were submitted earlier this year and were approved in a planning meeting on Wednesday evening.

Chief Executive Nigel Howe told readingfc.co.uk, "This is great news and we are extremely pleased that the Council have approved our plans.

"It's very exciting for both the football club, our fans and the region as a whole.

"The expansion will allow us to take the Club forward and further improve the facilities for our supporters as we aim to become an established force in the top flight.

"We will now consult with our contractors before deciding when construction will begin, and we will keep supporters fully informed at every stage."

Woodcote Royal We are full every week and can't compete on equal terms with most of our rivals in such a small ground but STILL we have fans who won't break out of that "Little Reading" box they crawled into years ago!

Given your comments on the Scott Brown thread on the team board, you can't really criticise other fans for having a 'Little Reading' syndrome.

Anyway, I reckon this is great news. So what if the added fans are 'new fans' - we all had to start some time.

I shall endeavour to take my camera to each home game so I can get pictures of the construction from my seat in front of the press box as it goes on.

Not bothered about that as their money is just as good as anyone elses, and the sole reason for increasing the stadium is to create extra revnue so we can become more competitive.

Even if there are some new 'fickle' supporters, then the first stage of getting people hooked on the club is to get them to games. Some will continue to come to watch the odd game, but I'm sure some will become full on proper supporters.

Anyway, I couldn't give a shit about other supporters knowledge of football, just as long as we win.

The club will sell out every hospitality spot, as that's the real reason behind the move. We'll sell out with ease 6 or 7 games and the rest of the games, it's a case of making tickets attractive to buy (price, good football, good marketing). The way ST's are priced in future will also have a major bearing, and as I expect next season we won't be sold out of them.

For every success story like Bolton, there is always a Bradford who start next season in League 2, that was my worry Woodcote.

RG30 I think the club have things covered.

The way the development is phased does mean that should we flop next season they can hold off on doing phase 2 and just have the extended East Stand. I don't believe that structurally they HAVE to do the N and S immediately after the East, and the PP last for 7 years.

If we do OK next season then it seems a fair gamble to get the whole lot in place now - not least becasue it will be cheaper to do it as one project rather than stop and then have to come back to it in a few years.

Yes I can.

I criticized Scott Browns remarks as totally unnecessary and would have said the same regardless of the size of the club to which he was referring.

You're the one who seems to assume that anyone who holds this view must have "Little Club Syndrome"

I was wondering, do you ever post on here without getting involved in an argument?

I thought I was argumentative but I am way below your level.

One thing that I'd like to point out is that the gates have (effectively) risen on a season by season basis. Its my standard image , but our attendences compared with Swindon's. Other than the blip after the first season in the 2nd tier, that's 7 years where its been growing.
