VAT

by Dirk Gently » 27 Nov 2008 17:11

For those who buy tickets individually, don't forget that ticket prices should go down by about 2.5% from Monday!

Not quite sure how the club will implement this though - or even if they will!

The bad news is that as the transaction for Season Tickets was done in the summer there's no chance of backdated reductions.

If there was I'd be after backdated reductions for everything I've ever bought !

Wasn't there a case a while back where clubs tried to argue that VAT wasn't due on season tickets until games were actually paid becasue that meant clubs could spread their VAT bill throughout the season rather than pay it up front in the summer when they sold the tickets. I believe the claim was thrown out, which was a shame as if it had won we could claim back the VAT on the unused portion of our STs

If no VAT was chargeable the net cost of a £23 ticket would be about £19.57.

If the cut is passed on then it should save 49p on a £23 ticket I reckon (i.e. it should cost 22.51 in future). That would represent a saving of about 2.13%.

On the other hand if the cut was not passed on and the overall price remained at £23 then the net ticket price would be £20. This would represent a net rise of about 43p or 2.2%

I would be very surprised if the reduction in VAT leads to cheaper tickets at RFC and other venues. I suspect that in most cases the cut will be implemented but will be balanced out by a slight increase in ticket prices prior to adding the new lower rate of VAT!

According to the radio this morning, a spokesman for RFC said that they would be passing on the VAT reductions on ticket sales and merchandise.

From this, I would assume that although ST holders have already paid for this year, this should mean that for next season, ST's will have 15% VAT on them, as the reduction runs for a year! Therefore, paying up front for a ST will definitely be the best option, if people can afford it!

It all helps. 2.5% off is 2.5p in every pound, therefore a £20 ticket should be reduced to £19.50. A £500 Season Ticket would therefore be reduced to £475. However that would be harder to judge as the club could well put prices up anyway meaning any reduction could go unnoticed.

Interesting thing in all this is that tickets for away games should reduce accordingly on purchases made from next week - anyone got any information that tickets for Barnsley, Birmingham etc. are reducing?

Barry

Is that sum correct ?

Surely you are adding 15% to the base price instead of 17.5% rather than taking 2.5 % of the sale price away ?

If you take 2.5% off £20 you are giving away more than 2.5% of the base price of the ticket by a small amount....

So if the ticket was £10 and 17.5% VAT made it £11.75 and 15% made it £11.50, taking 2.5 % off £11.75 would take you to £11.45

Interesting stuff !

Divide the "current" sales price by 1.175 to give you the price, less the VAT.
The multiply it by 1.15 to give you Mondays price

That's not strictly true. The key point is the date in which you recieve the service you paid for. If the service was paid for before 1st December 2008 but the actual service was provided after this date, then the service provider have the option to provide a credit note for the reduction in VAT.

The service provider can then reclaim the full 2.5% in the next VAT Return. However, I do believe that it is at the discresion of the service provider and they have no obligation to do so..... the service provider would gain nothing (except the goodwill of its consumer) and it could end being abit of an administrative pain in butt. I do also believe that the onus is on the consumer to ask.

There's obviously a few more technicalaties than that, but I'm not too sure that the full effects of this changed has been fully thought through!

A common misconception. I reduction of 2.5% in the VAT is not 2.5p in th £ but 2.5p in the £1.175

What a wonderful job our politicians have done in educating our populace!

I believe westendgirl is correct - perhaps she went to a private school or was educated at a time when education, rather than fiddling stats was the priority!
