Stewards - Opinions

by Gordons Cumming » 16 Dec 2008 17:47

How do the Stewards at Reading compare with those at other clubs?

I don't mean the Chief / Deputy Stewards, just the run of the mill ones doing it for a little extra cash and free entry to the stadium  (plus free food and drink and car parking space)

Worse than Bristol City ("If you do stand on the seats, try not to break them" ).

Better than Cardiff (who's stewards seemed to think we were hellbent on smashing up Ninian Park, and treated us accordingly).

Which stewards do you mean ?

The Tangos, the club employed ones (usually the supervisors) or the agency temps who tend to man the fire exits etc ?

Not the Tangos or the agency temps.

Just the ordinary RFC employed stewards.

Now let's be fair. An errant shot in the players' warm-up did smash one of the seats.

Impossible to generalise - as with every profession, some are superb, while some are a virtual waste of good oxygen.

Compared to other grounds I'd say our stewards are better than most, when you take into account some places like Ipswich and Middlesboro where there is a policy of being massively authoritarian verging on the brutal.

^'greed, DG. Plus, as you pointed out on the way back from Barnsley, our stewards "police" us 23 games a season and so can be a bit more harsh on "persistent standing" - the majority of away end stewards soleley want a game to pass with no trouble.

Speaking of Barnsley stewards - Clunk was a legend!!

Adding on to this, because we have a reputation as being well-behaved away supporters, when we are away we get treated a lot better than many other sets of fans.

Much of football policing and stewarding today is based upon reputation and stereotying, rather than any intelligence or facts.

Clearly not paid to take a kicking or have objects thrown at them. Compare the stewarding of the Mad to other clubs and i'm pretty sure other clubs are much more OTT.

I've tried Babelfish to translate that in various languages, and still can't work out what he's saying :?:

Worryingly, he gets to vote.

Im old school so I would rather see policemen standing around the ground then a lot of minimum wage legalised wannabe thugs telling us what to do.
