RoyalBlue Which clowns scheduled this work for then?

Why the F8ck don't they move it by a few days. Saturday nights tend to be quieter.

Should make the idiots appear on the pitch at the Mad Stad at half-time!

Yeah . they should re scheduling major roadworks around a football match that wasn't scheduled to be played on that day anyway. Surely football comes before everything else?

Not so stupid as you make out. The game was switched some time back, not at sure notice. A closure that early at night on a weekday evening is stupid, regardless of whether there is a football game on. The game just makes it even worse. However, anyone who uses our road network knows that nowadays the Govt, Highways Agency and their contractors don't give a f*ck about trying to minimise inconvenience for car users (the absurdly long 50mph stretches on the M1 and M3 being just a couple of examples).

Not quite true, they'd carry out the works on a Friday between 2 and 8 if they really didn't give a damn.

Ultimately some people do have to be inconviencied for the greater good. I'm sure they're as sorry as I am that on this occasion it's you, RoyalBlue :)

Usually Highways England include embargo periods in the contract documents for days when football is being played such that Traffic management cannot be put in place on said days. In this case, as the match was changed at late notice, Highways England would then have to pay the contractor to delay the project in order to comply with the embargo. With it being on a week when the main beams were being lifted into place on a number of sequential days, the costs in both £££'s and time would be huge. In addition a traffic order with the police to move the beams this week would have been in place months ago and again would have been a huge issue to change.

At last - someone who actually knows what they are talking about!

RoyalBlue - any chance you could make yourself available for a half time pitch appearance on Thursday night?!

Its bad enough the game being bought forward to a bloody Thursday. This has ruined a few drinks we had planned with some of the other lot!
The fact the M4 will be shut just aggravates the issue further.
Living in East Berks I usually avoid the M4 for the back roads through Whitley, Lower Earley and A329M.
Going to be carnage leaving Urrrgh!! (Especially with the fake hoops going that way)

When you have to get up early and don't get home to 6pm, I might just stay in and watch it on the telly. Going to be a lot less aggravation.

Peach saying that there is a review meeting today between all parties involved ( HA, Wok Council , contractor and the club) and the issue of delaying the closure Thursday will be discussed. They seem to think it will be delayed.

If the contractors confident he will get the beams placed and everything clear by the 5pm deadline, they'll probably go for it. If not the risk is that the closure will extend into the morning rush hour which would be worse than delaying for football traffic. In addition the contractor will get a black mark (bad KPI) against him if he's "late off". Unless that gets waived by HE (Highways England, no longer HA) they may not go for it.

So, as I suggested, and for which I was derided by some, it was possible for common sense to prevail. The work has been rescheduled in terms of start time tomorrow evening. I wonder whether the contractors had to be paid more money? I suspect not.

True, they could have made it worse in relation to the M4 and completely and utterly not giving a damn. However, in the case of the M3 and M1 restrictions they seem to have managed to successfully go the whole hog in terms of both distance and time duration of restrictions.

Worth adding that the work was slightly delayed due to recent wet weather which put things behind schedule.
When.it's all done it will be a useful road on match days.

I'm a little disappointed tbh.

I was going to use the roadworks as a reason not to go to the game.

Now I will have to rely on

Poor form (understatement)
Probable poor atmosphere
High winds and rain
Disillusionment
Saving money by not travelling and
Good old Apathy
