Red Yeh I struggle to believe it can't be worth it - we're not talking building a new line here just an additional halt. A fairly basic construction (let's think Winnersh Triangle) can't cost more than a few grand to put up, surely?

Unlikely. Apart from the structure there will be track and signal changes which I guess are pretty expensive.

When you factor in things such as the need to close the lines for part of the time whilst the platforms are built (forcing all trains onto another route + bus replacement services), you very quickly clock up into the £100ks is compensation to the train operators alone, before you even look at the construction costs. (You cannot build a platform next to a live railway line - you need to close it for at least part of the cosntruction period).
Then add in the need to make your station fully accessible for disabled passengers (so you need lifts and / or very large and long pedestrian ramps), and your bill starts rocketing upwards very quickly.

It is a shame this project is dead, but no surprise in the current financial climate. It was tagged on the back of new housing proposals, and without the new housing there is nothing to trigger the expenditure on a new station.

I'd have a bloddy good go at it.

I agree that you may have a brief line closure but not for long, surely.

It is possible to build a platform while trains are on slow running past the scene and I am pretty sure that is how Winnersh Triangle was done.

The lifts etc are also not a significant factor. They can be just as easily installed at the same time. They come prefabricated, ready to put in place. (Again, check out new stops like Winnersh Triangle).

Ok, but what's the benefit that justifies the cost of the building work?

The cost of building a station could be justified if it made several thousand houses saleable - because its presence makes those houses more desirable to potential purchasers.

But for companies already at Green Park, and for use for football/rugby for a couple of hours once a week, there's nothing to justify spending that money.

I'm just a fan of investing in our public transport infrastructure, and making it as easy as possible for as many people as possible to use it Svlad.

If it took a few cars off the road for commuting and the football then great.

So am I, most definitely. Just not sure that this station would be worthwhile in doing that without the accompanying housing development.

Well that's where you and I disagree then, and has been the crux of the argument for the last few pages.

Indeed, but neither if us are the ones who'd have to stump up the money. It's Prudential, and they've decided that the station construction costs can't be justified without the housing development.

Agreed Red.

If the worst comes to the worst, the station gets closed down, and then in 30 years time people can rediscover such closed down stations and muse on how different the world might be were they still to exist.

This stinks of blackmail by the Prudential, originally there were no plans for housing, yet the Station was always proposed for the office park, it has always been all
over the sales blurb for Green Park, IMHO there would be a bigger reason for the housing if the infrastructure came first, build the station Pru, Green Park needs it, I am not sure that it will be that much help to football.

TBH it was never going to be much help to football. Too far away, no special trains no siding for trains to wait in.

Local railways can be very useful for transport issues, they should be like the underground in London, which is why Green Park Station shouldmbe built, as should a station near twin bridges in Bracknell, could serve Waitrose estate and the dell stuff on the other side.

I think what is really needed in those cases is a tram - or even better a monorail!

But too many stations on railway lines mean too many stops and journey times being too long for many people. So specialised local transport would be a lot better.
