If you really wanted this to take off, and not have the vote hijacked by fans from Oxford and Swindon, then surely clipboards at the turnstiles would be the right way to go.

Also, the legends after which any stands are named need to be legends! This usually means someone from the past and certainly not still involved in the game. Therefore Hicks, Friday and Tranter would get my vote. To those who say Coppell - remember RFC didn't start in 2004!

Dirk Gently Never going to happen whilst the rugger-buggers share with us - because it might upset them!

The rugger buggers can piss off.

Anyway, instead of naming the stands after anyone (never understood why we need to do so), why don't we name the stands after some nearby location, i.e.:

South Stand = The A33 Stand.
North Stand = The Hotel Stand.
East Stand = Green Park Stand.
West Stand = The Wind Turbine Stand.

Or maybe:

South Stand = Whitley Stand
North Stand = Smallmead Stand
West Stand = Motorway Stand
East Stand = Reading Stand

I'm not sure this is any better than North, South etc. They still sound soulless.

I don't get you. Soulless? Why? Elm Park had stands called South Bank, Tilehurst End, North Stand and the Town End. I don't get why you need to name a stand after somebody "to give it a soul", when you could name it after the location the stand is at. Nothing wrong with that.

The A33 Stand?

It's in a business park. I can't think of anything more soulless than naming after anything around there...apart from the windmill maybe.

I was actually kidding about calling the South Stand the A33 Stand!

Do you realise, the Madejski Stadium came to the area before the business park?

East: The Robin Friday Stand
South: The Death End
West Upper: The JE Sydenham Upper Stand

They don't share, they rent. And they can go do one. Upset them my arse.

I think you've mixed up your compass points and your geography somewhat

There was a campaign of sorts on here about 10 years ago, just after Maurice Evans died, to rename the East Stand The Maurice Evans Stand. Some reported that they'd phoned the ticket office asking for seats in the Maurice Evans Stand and the TO knew what they were talking about. As with most things Reading, though, it petered out because there was never really the will there to carry it through.

Like JSC said, Reading fans haven't got the drive to carry things like this through. Don't get me wrong I would love to see things like this happen at the Madejski to at least attempt to give the place some sort of character, I just don't think Reading fans have got it in their locker to push for stuff like this and make any real impact.

Shirley the Martin Hicks stand should be Upper West, as this is where the majority of his clearances would end up.

If STAR were to seriously push for something like this (I mean seriously, and follow it through, not just take the first brush off and give up) I would join.

I was just going to say that this is just the sort of thing STAR should be getting involved in.

That is wrong.

The Evans family made it quite clear that they didn't want a stand named after him. The plaque was agreed with them as an appropriate memorial and despite the suggestions that RFC fans don't deliver it was put in place thanks 100% to the work of fans.

Fans have also delivered on other things in the past but I would agree that these days most people seem happy to post a few comments on a website rather than put their heads above the parapet and actually do anything....

One of the thoughts that popped into my head last night when I was lying there awake in the dark was that we could name some stands after our achievements. So...

The 106 stand
The Steve Death Stand
and The Simod Cup Stand

How about naming them after the 4 points of the compass? Easy to remember, and there's little difficulty in finding them if you know which way you are facing.
