I can't remember if it was an exclusive football special but it certainly felt like it.

Went to the World Cup in Germany and got on a train with a load of Australia fans that took us to a clearing in the middle of the woods where there were bars and pubs temporarily set up. The train then took everyone from this wooded area to the Allianz Arena.

That sounds like a dream. Well, except the Australians.

There was a spell, mostly through the 1980s, where a good following of us would either block-book seats on a train..or take an 'unofficial' coach to away games.

So although not strictly a 'football special', many a glorious and eventful day was spent travelling to the likes of York, Lincoln, Preston, Ipswich, Walsall, Wigan and numerous other grounds.

Hazy, great days :D

Oooh yes - I remember the Persil away days.

Or, more accurately, I don't remember the Persil awaydays!

Bowman's Quiver
Schards#2 Can only remember ever going on two specials, Hereford away in the cup (as previously mentioned but we did have several shots including one by Ray Hiron in the last minute that shaved the post) and Swansea away in the FA Cup circa 1979 where we got thumped 4-1, got chased back to the station and the train was pelted with bricks as it left.

Neither of these trains could be described as "dry"

I think the Swansea match was 1980. I was on that train out of Reading and it was packed the rafters. I remember being frog-marched from the station to Vetch Field and then being shoe-horned into a small pen in the corner of the ground which had bars/barriers stopping spectators climbing over the wall onto the pitch. As a 15-year old that was pretty hairy.

I remember waving to you lot from Platform 5 as I was off back home to London. I felt quite embarrassed then about not going to the game but I had a pretty bad time down there a few years before - attacked outside the ground, least hospitable club ever etc. Seems like it was a good decision by me though!

Quite frankly, if that had happened to me in Germany I would have hit the ground running when I got off the train and would still be running.
