Hoops

by Forbury Lion » 20 Aug 2011 18:24

So, The club previously came out and said that plain back shirts were a requirement for the premier league (even though we were not in the Premier League at the time) and we knew the club would release a new kit if we were (which they did).

Anyway, I note that QPR are playing in the premier league with hooped shirts, front and back.... Now, either the club were mistaken, the rules have changed, the fans were mislead or QPR have just stuck two fingers up to the rules (if this is the case then I respect them for it).

The current home shirt is good and I've just bought it... but they're not hoops and I can't see any reason why.

Given Sunderland have been playing for several seasons in the Prem without a back panel how is this a new question?

Is it because they don't go round the back of the shirt?

It's not a new question, It's an unanswered question which has been repeated.... do keep up.

The reason it has been repeated is that QPR are in an identical situation to that which Reading FC were in and as they wear hoops the comparison is more valid.

We're a well run club,
And we're in the black,
We're scared of rule breaking,
So no hoops on the back

About the only thing I can offer in defence of the decision is that it might be to do with Puma and their designs rather than our request. I can't see why a club would choose to have a solid single coloured panel instead of their real colours.

It doesn't tell us anything we didn't know. We already knew you don't have to have a back panel, hoops or stripes, makes no difference. Television companies prefer a plain back so we give it to them because we're pussies and don't really care that the fans want proper hoops.

It's possible Sky told us we had to do it and we backed down so as not to have a problem with them and Sunderland / QPR etc just told them to nob off and risked what ever crap could be thrown their way.

Another big possibility this, the kit manufacturers probably have "understandings" with the TV companies. Wouldn't surprise me if you had to pay extra to get your stripes / hoops all the way round. Which we aren't likely to think is worth the cash.

Sunderland and QPR both no back panel again. There is NO REASON at all why we shouldn't have hoops all the way around. It's the clubs choice and for some reason they choose to ruin the symmetry of the shirt.

We're not in the black though, we're in the red. But less red than most.

Does Puma make Sunderland and QPR's shirts?

Do you think Puma or Reading FC design the shirt?

As a few people have said, I like the front of this year's shirt very much, but don't want to buy it with the plain back.

Seeing as we've had hoops only once (I think) since 04/05, has anyone ever asked the club why? Or got an answer other than that its a league requirement, which it clearly isn't? They're very keen on fan interaction at the moment, what with Facebook and Twitter, so although I have no idea how early they start designing next season's shirt now might be a good time to bring it up.

I don't buy it that Puma get the final say about hoops all the way around or not. Also the other season we produced a shirt with hoops all the way around (from Puma) and then we had a game on Sky and the club added a back panel, and then we stuck with it for the rest of the season!

Fwiw over the last couple of seasons I have sent no less than five emails to RFC concerning the lack of hoops on our home shirt, receiving only one, particularly curt, response, informing me that (paraphrased) it doesn't matter what I think, because the shirts are very popular.
