Wrap up warm. Three pairs of socks haven't stopped my toes from near freezing off there before.

The cross wind across the stand is fairly bracing.

Yeah people at work warning me it's Baltic up there. Is it because the stadium is on open ground?

The ground is at the top of a hill and a nice open corner next to the away end allows the wind to keep a permanent silly grin on your face.

Haven't been there for a quite a while now. However, there's a Harvester Pub very close to the Stadium (think you can also park there). They allow away fans in iirc.

They used to have a healthy sized 'element' among their support so pub choice was limited. I think it's probably changed a bit now. The Stadium is one of those awkwardly placed grounds which is relatively isolated on the city's fringes. In terms of pubs in Stoke (not Hanley) city centre, 'The Glebe' next to the City Council Civic Centre is an olde worlde type corner pub (used to be a stadium shuttle bus from there), 'The White Star' is another decent one and there's the usual wetherspoons pub called 'The Wheatsheaf'. The only other one I've been in is called 'The Gardener's Retreat' which was pretty good but can't remember the location off hand. I know a few Stoke fans and usually meet them whenever we play and I never wear colours, so not sure about permitting away fans (should be ok against us I should think).

Other than the region's historic links to pottery, I admit I know sod all about Stoke. I'm not even entirely sure what region it's in. Does it count as 'North of England' or 'Midlands'? It exists as some kind of metaphysically homeless no man’s land adrift from better known English areas. What does Stoke have to offer culturally or historically? I know the punk band Discharge are from there.

The thing Stoke is famous for (after pottery) for me is the "5 towns" thing. Although I've never really understood why such a big deal is made of it, a lot of towns have expanded and swallowed up their suburbs, how is Stoke different :?:

Archetypal post-industrial/manufacturing decline City with persisting scars. Pottery and Coal Mining were the biggest employers so not Thatcher loving territory. One of the most Northerly points of the Midlands (anything beyond is North really).

The Staffordshire Moorlands and nearby Peak District provide the natural beauty spots. Struggling economy which would require masses of investment to fully modernise. Comparatively poor to the rest of the UK. Residents are community minded and usually quite friendly. Nearest City to Alton Towers theme park.

Culture is a bit thin, Robbie Williams is from there (Burslem). Pubs and Darts! - World Champ Phil Taylor is from there. It was also one of the UK's original House Music/Rave club Cities - Legendary nightclub 'Shelleys' in Longton was one of the first after the Hacienda in Manchester (the famous DJ Sasha was the resident there). It was demolished around the time a dual carriageway (that also runs past the Stadium) was built. Later on, another club 'Entropy' was established at another venue (The Leisurebowl) which was also one of the best in the country.
