Biggest Reading Away following

by STAR Liaison » 20 Oct 2015 10:36

Sparked off by the Fulham away thread, memories of the biggest Reading away (ie not neutral ground) followings ...

Any advance on 7,000 away at Arsenal in the League Cup 2005?

Manchester U in FA Cup 2007?

Brighton in League 1970? - even they couldn't have got 32,000 for a Div Three game on their own!!

In terms of % of the total crowd maybe we had 50%+ at Newport 1985, Bournemouth 1994?

Bournemouth away the year we won the League under FSB. We must of had 80% of the crowd.

Didn't we have more vs Bolton at Wembley in 95? I remember we out-sold them comfortably. Their excuse was the League Cup final...

Good numbers for Arsenal away in early 70s in FACup according to the old man.

Southampton away League cup quarter final replay in 79 decent too.

Recent times it must be the Arsenal league cup game in 05.

Took a fair few up to Wigan for a playoff game in 2001, they gave us a whole side stand.

Likely to be limited by available tickets.

Obviously the crowds we took we Wembley are the largest.

But let's limit it to LEAGUE games only.

What is the largest support we've taken away in the league IN EACH DIVISION we've been in?

Presumably the biggest overall would be for a trip to Arsenal or ManU or Chelsea or Spurs or Liverpool in the PL so would be a bit dull to confirm.

I think there was a thread on this a few months back with Arsenal the biggest mentioned.

A few others:

Bristol City away 1995, about 4,500 - 5,000. About half the crowd that day, they'd already been relegated.
Man Utd in the Cup Jan 2007. About 5,000 I think, we had the middle tier behind goal.
Derby 2008.?

Wigan in the play offs seems to get wild over statements for support that day. We took about 3,000, we had the side which was nowhere near full, empty blocks at either end.

Bournemouth away 94 should win as it wont be beaten for away days. 2 sides of ground, fans running across from each through the game, poured with rain and a fan smashing home a shot goal wide, everyone piles on!

...and the fans behind the goal thinking Gilkes had scored it, not the fan. Apparently teletext gave it as a goal to Gilkes too, for a minute or two.

It took me months to find out why the ref restarted with a free kick to Bournemouth.

Bournemouth away in '94 was a very, very lively day.

Good shout... I was in the home end and as the game was about to Kick Off, stewards moved me into away section.

I think we had 4,500. Early kick off on a Sunday rings a bell as well?

Can someone with too much time on their hands convert our attendance to a % of overall attendance?

Think the first one your old man is referring to was a League Cup game in 67 - 27,000 total attendance - wasn't there but said to 'a huge following.'

2nd one was good - the whole of the open end? But not 7000.

Arsenal 2005 by quite a stretch. We had the whole of the goal + another allocation along the side of the pitch. And a few people I knew purchased in the home ends through ticketmaster.
