Hoops?

by Blue Stratos » 05 Sep 2006 09:17

Why do our shirts not have hoops on the back? I haven't seen Newcastle, or Blackburn for example following the so called ruling for a plain back. So what's the deal?

You're about 3 months late in this discussion. I don't think anyone knows why.

Edit: correcting "your" to "you're". Very sorry.

It looks as if the club has either
- misread the rules about hoops/ stripes and failed to notice that the plain backs are for European competitions only (hence Newcastle have a different strip for euro games, with a plain panel on the back).
- are assuming that we will be in Europe next year and don't want a further new strip to be sold (unlikely).
- have seen evidence that the rules for europe are to be enforced in England soon, and are pre-empting the requirement.
- been stung by Puma who have forced it on them for (perhaps) costs reasons.

I think that the first option is the most likely, with the 3rd one as the next most likely!

I've said it, I think it's a fad. There are even some teams in the basement division with plain backs too! The sooner the fad passes by the better.

Don't think this is true. Certainly the kit Newcastle wore against Ventspils last month had stripes. It was noticeable because they had printed the names in white letters, half of which were thus rendered utterly illegible.

Is that because they we're playing in a European competition and not the Premiership where the rule affects us?

I would think that they wear a different kit in the Premiership than in Europe as there are probably different rules.

They wear stripes in the Premiership, too.

YES THERE ARE!

EUFA INSISTS ON NUMBERS BEING ON A PLAIN BACKGROUND FOR EUROPE.

IS THAT LOUD ENOUGH FOR YOU???

There may be no English specific rules - but there are rules and we appear to have overreacted to them.

Do we play in Europe? And who is EUFA? For the Premiership, there are no specific rules concerning the back panels.

Are the posts regarding Newcastle v Ventspils invisible on your screen then?

He said numbers and, to be fair, Newcastle's numbers were printed on a black panel. It was just the lettering of the names that was illegible.

Indeed, but the panel is so small and tight to the numbers that at a quick glance it is actually difficult to tell that they aren't really a completely striped back.

Certainly they demonstrate that we could have retained near-hoops on the back if we had put our minds to it.

Agreed. To be honest, if we would just invest in better lettering/numbering*, there'd be no need for panels of any description.

*Thicker, so that the blue doesn't show through, and with a contrasting outline, so that the number stands out against both the blue and the white.

Then read my complete post not just the first line. Also, refer back to my previous post and see ifyou understand it.

Oh, and I can vouch for the Newcastle panels being there for their numbers (in accordance with the EUFA requirement).

Anyone know what the colours of our very first away kit were?

....and was it hooped?

In my opinion it would be great to have 'traditional styled' properly hooped home and away kits.

I remember we had red and yellow and blue and yellow hooped kits in the 90's.

ok I admit my short term finger error! UEFA doesn't look so aesthetically pleasing as EUFA though!
