Car parking chaos

by TFF » 12 Sep 2006 09:10

Got to the ground more than an hour before kick off last night only to be turned away "car park full" and re-directed to Smallmead. That in turn was nearly full so had to park right on the far side of the track.

Handed a slip on the way in warning that due to dog-racing their car park won't be available for next two (I think) home games.

Took 60+ mins to get out afterwards :x

And add to the the complete chaos around Jct 11 again.

According to the man in charge of traffic control the solution to the traffic problem is to CLOSE the HP car park. Apparently it is the queue of traffic trying to get in there that causes jct 11 to become gridlocked.

What he didn't say was where all the cars that park in there should then go and park.

Too right, even kerbside parking there rather than using the car parks themselves would be damn useful.

I got to J11 roundabout at 6.20pm, and got out of my car at HP at 7.35pm. Absolute bloody nightmare. Might have saved 10 minutes of my time however had the steward standing outside Foster-Wheeler actually told me he was there as the car park was not available, and not just smiled at me.

Likewise, spent nearly an hour trying to leave the car park.

The problem begins way back at the M4, with drivers indicating left only at J11, and not joining the queue earlier.

Its also not helped by the number of selfish idiots who block the exits and routes across roundabouts. Some box junctions and police cameras would be a help.

Nothing annoys me more than w@nkers who don't que on the m-way but just drive down the middle lane and signal to get in the left lane at the last minute. People who actually let them annoy me as well.

The obvious solution is to open Green Park, this should have been a condition of the planning permission.

It seems far worse for midweek games than Saturdays and we won't be having too many of them this year.

There's simply not enough parking space and closing the HP car park would turf another 2000 cars out to park elsewhere. A better solution may be to direct cars parking at HP to go down Basingstoke Road rather than A33.

Shame the police are only ever concerned with speeding offences rather than the more annoying general bad and inconsiderate driving. Having plod parked up on J11 looking at the roundabout and onto the M4 may well make many people think more considerately, especially if they pull people down to have a chat and delay them even more!

Green Park have a clamping policy and will not let football traffic park on the roads in the estate. Lucky for me I park at my office.

The HP car park does cause the gridlock as the traffic approaches from all directions and queues to get into the car park. This applies to traffic from M4 J11, to traffic coming from town on the A33 and also traffic trying to take the shortcut through Whitley Wood.

A town like Reading with aspirations of being a City cannot allow this situation to continue. Reading Council needs to force the management at Green Park to allow football parking.

Using what power?
Is Green Park wholly in the RBC area anyway? Are parts of it also in West Berkshire and Wokingham?

My brother-in-law just flashes his ( out of date ) Costco card  and parks in the offices of my sister-in-laws husband in Green Park.

Piece of p*ss.

Anyone know if they ticketed on the grass verge along the A33? That was full when I left in both directions.

train station time. Start enforcing it now. Even on the bus it took 25 minutes to travel about 2-3 miles to the stadium

foster wheeler was available

was parked in there and on the first bus at 6:30, bus left about 6:40 and was at the stadium around 7:10

second bus must have arrived around 6:45 however I doubt tany further buses would have made it in time for kick off.

I've started to cycle to matches this season to avoid the hassle (and car park charges) - a guaranteed 30 minutes door-to-door whatever the traffic, though I do miss the after-match interviews and analysis on Radio Berkshire. The relief road doesn't feel like the safest road to be cycling along after a match, but it does have wide pavements for those who don't want to brave the road.

The only problem is picking the flies out of your teeth after yet another home win ;-)

The council should link some bit planning decision or similar with the football parking issue. Something like "Yes you can build a new office block but in return you must..."

Councils do this to developers all the time.
