Steward abuse and standing

by STAR Liaison » 24 Jan 2007 12:00

I was asked at the senior management meeting today to pass on a message to all fans of Reading, the East stand and Y26 in particular, that the club will not condone persistant standing and will certainly not allow abuse of the stewards who are doing the job they are employed for.

This is not a discussion of what the rules should be and whether we agree with them but a warnng that the rules that currently exist will be enforced and if it is necessary large numbers may find themselves banned from the Madejski.

The club is particularly aware that Reading fans are bottom of the fans fair play league and possibly working towards reduced away allocations if they continue this way. Although our fans are witty and knowledgeable in some songs, their song on Saturday abusing their own stewards is a step too far for the club.

If we finish bottom of the fair play league do we get relegated?

Seriously though, How does the fair play league work? If it's based on the number of people thrown out by stewards it can easilly be distorted by the stewards simply not throwing fans out.

As a sensible suggestion, Perhaps the club could print out some warning posters or letters and stick them on seats or on the entrance gates, that way fans will be aware there is a crackdown taking place and they only have themselves to blame if thrown out and banned.

How about STAR make it clear to the club that the away fans should be treated exactly as we are in the East Stand.

Make them sit down!

Why the need for posters / letters?

Surely everyone knows what the rules are for all seater stadiums and the penalties for persistant standing!

I know the majority think the club are unfair, but surely they are only doing their job in line with the requirements from the football licencing authority and other overseeing bodies.

I will be well pissed off if we start having our away allocations reduced because a few numpties can't behave themselves at the Mad!

Why would the club punish our away fans? Ridiculous. Normally away allocations get reduced when the away fans misbehave, not when the home fans do.

This is a complete over reaction from the club, and i can't believe the club are taking some lame a$$ fans fair play league seriously. This is not a league that measures arrests or violence, which is the real assessment of 'fan behaviour'. If anyone thinks Reading fans are actually the worse behaved they are bigger muppets then the people who came up with this league in the first place.

RFC really are doing all they can to drive traditional Reading fans away and replace them with robots who sit there in silence. When there is no atmosphere left in the ground and the players and management moan about this, then the club will have got exactly what they deserve.

Already has for Man Utd - IIRC a few grounds give them (or have in recent times) reduced allocation for exactly that, persisting standing!

No, but if both sets of fans should be treated the same and they aren't.

What was the song from saturday that is meant to have abused the steward? If it was 'stand up if you hate stewards' that is apparently abusing then that is pathetic.

err... "a warning that the rules that currently exist will be enforced".

If RFC want better compliance from home fans with the rules, then enforce it equally and everywhere.

Send that back to Senior Management , please STAR.

Agreed. If they continue to go on about this then we need to make a stand.

I still find it hard to believe that we're apparently bottom of this fair play league.
There isn't much standing that takes place, and certainly no more than the likes of United and co that have come to the Madejski this season and stood for the majority of the 90.

That has got to be a mistake. Our whole away support has only stood all together the once and that was West Ham. Sections have stood at Sheffield United, Fulham etc but not all together, and no one told us to sit down anyway.

Surely everyone knows what the rules are for all seater stadiums and the penalties for persistant standing!
People know the rules for drink driving too but the government are keen to keep awareness levels raised, hence the annual advertising campaigns.

Some of the standers have probably got complacent, safe in the knowledge that they can ignore the stewards or wait until they've gone before standing up.

If the aim is to raise awareness of the fact these actions will be dealt with in a more heavy handed way then the best way to do that is to send a message out to the fans.... Unfortunately STAR can not reach everyone who may flout these regulations, but a sign on the turnstiles warning that fans will be banned if caught standing is likely to be read by all those who can read (About half of the East Stand  ).

Best way to make it clear is to lead by example, thereby freeing up stewards from the home stands to enforce this in the away end.
