THE PITCH

by MR. CYNICAL » 14 Dec 2008 13:30

Apologies if this is in the wrong place or already been mentioned but just to comment how much worse the pitch is this season than it has been compared to the last two seasons. Worse pitch in the championship by a mile and after all the money we spent on it last year.Hope its not going to affect our home form for the remaining games.
Thoughts anyone?

Um, lot of rain? Gets churned up more. Takes a bashing from the rugby?

Really worried about it. I think it affected the way we played yestreday, and would like to see all Youth, Reserve, Academy and egg-chaser games banned from the Mad Stad until it's sorted. It's a tough enough campaign as it is - we don't want the pitch to make it even harder.

An emphatic + 1. It looked horrible. To be honest it makes yesterday's win seem more and more impressive.

Rugby match played on it Thursday night - after a week of wet weather as well - never going to be too good surface for yesterdays game. Lets hope egg chasing doesnt put a big spanner in our season

4 games in 8 days was on 107.

With the wet weather as mentioned it was always going to happen. Problem is now getting it decent again. Something we may struggle with.

4 Games in 8 days did it... our game, Rugby, a youth cup game and an other all took their toll'

Is our pitch 100% natural, as the % grass with plastic fibre pitch's tend to last longer. I know the lower leagues use these more.

they said on the championship that the pitch has been used 4 times in 8 days so it is no surprised it was looking pretty bad

are we still using those massive light structures to make the grass grow longer?

If they had played on my back lawn, which hasn't had four games including 30 big fat rugby players on it, it still would have cut up with all the rain we have had. What do you bloddy expect? Strewth.

Football was better in the 1970s and then every pitch was grassless in the box and in the middle: Derby's had no grass at all.
I thought yesterday's pitch was fine.

Pitch seemed to play OK, no standing water, ball ran pretty true, no one struggling to keep their feet.

There's now a week until the next game - plenty of time for it to drain as long as we get a couple of dry days.

The lights we had last year were borrowed from the Millenium Stadium. Not sure if we plan to take them again this year but it doesn't look there is much need. The grass cover is better this year than it was this time last year.

Worse than the rain is the frost, it stops water from draining, and makes the surface very slippery, playing one game on it in those conditions wont help, however it will soon recover, I for one hope that the extension allows more light onto the pitch, this would help a lot IMHO.

I suspect they won't have been using the undersoil heating a great deal either - I know it's a mixed blessing anyway as it can kill the roots but you are right that the combination of heavy use, frost and rain is a nightmare. If the ground freezes after a game it limits what work the groundstaff can do on it as well...
