Brum Royal Why does it have to be the Dutch for us? I know we're limited on groups as to which 3rd place team we can play, but is there a pre-determined group or position in the 3rd place league that we will get drawn against?

Yes please can someone explain how it is determined which 3rd place team England will get as the competiton specifies group C winners will get 3rd place from one of D/E or F. All well and good if only 1 3rd place qualifier comes from those 3 groups but how do they decide which of them if, say, all 3 groups produce qualifiers?

There are 15 combinations of potential 3rd place qualifiers.

For each combination a 3rd place side is allocated to a tie.

After results to date, 12 combinations have been ruled out. 2 of the 3 remaining combinations will see England play the Netherlands. The final combination only happens if Hungary are eliminated after today's games.

That only happens with a Czech or Georgian win and if the Czech's don't beat the Turks by a 3 goal margin.

Royal Rother Wow.

Aye but it is clear from the start who likely opponents are going to be based on combinations - you can see the full list here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro ... kout_stage

but as things stand today the most likely R2 games with 3rd place sides (assuming Czech or Georgia won't win, as don't think either will)

Spain v Group E (probably Slovakia)
England V Netherlands
1E (prob Belgium) v Slovenia
Portugal v Hungary

Orion1871 Lewandowsky stops three times in his run up and misses a penalty, but the French keeper is penalised for coming off his line, it's retaken, and Lewandowsky scores whilst doing the exact same run up.

The laws are far stricter on keepers than they are on penalty takers.

Yep it was nonsense. Either change the rule so that the penalty taker isn't allowed to stop/stutter his run up or allow the keeper to move forward off his line once the taker stops/stutters.

TOTALLY agree. The rules as they stand are absolute bollocks and makes it so difficult for 'keepers.

But isn' t the point of a penalty that it is meant to be difficult for the keeper to stop the pen. Generally it is given due a foul/hand ball that has stopped the opposition from creating a chance or scoring.

As a result of that, the offended team get a big chance to score, the keeper has a chance to stop it of course but the overwhelming advantage is meant to be with the side taking the kick, so I have no problem with it.

I suppose that's a fair point tbh! :D

(Guess I was speaking as an ex-keeper.)

Scrap penalties, just award penalty goals.

Then teams will avoid making the fouls and rely on the attackers to miss/keeper to save, problems solved.

Make the goals bigger while they're at it.

I like the idea of the attacking team having an option to take a penalty goal or a red card for the defender in circumstances where a goal was near certain (Suarez handling on the line in the World Cup springs to mind)
Not sure how practical it is, though

So does Slovakia leading and the Ukrainians in 3rd as we are currently change England's potential opponent in the next round? Could we face Ukraine rather than Netherlands?

Just as I post this Romania equalise v Slovakia, but the question still stands

I was also trying to find what separated Denmark and Slovenia in the end, and last night BBC posted this in the England live feed

BBC England go through as group winners.

Denmark finish second with Slovenia third - both sides go through.

They finished level on points, goal difference, goals scored and disciplinary record (6-6 on yellow cards).

The next tie breaker was who had the best qualifying record - and Denmark finished above Slovenia - coincidentally in the same qualifying group - on head-to-head record, after both sides finished qualifying on the same amount of points too.

Good grief, they didn't half make separating teams complicated!

Belgium look worse than us. Too many egos in that squad. Had great players for years now but they aren't a good unit.

What does the possibility of Georgia winning mean for the next round ?

Also, why is Andros Townsend proving beyond any doubt he doesn’t know the laws of the game ?
