That American Referee Woman on ITV

by St Pauli » 11 Jul 2024 07:42

You gotta feel for her.

Whenever there’s a VAR decision they turn on the mic in whatever cupboard she’s locked in, and ask her to give an immediate comment on the decision.

Obviously out of some sort of ref solidarity she usually goes with the decision of the on field ref, apparently forgetting that the main reason VAR decisions come up is where the on field ref has got something ‘wrong’. So she usually comes out with some bold statement because it’s her job to make something bold and decisive quickly, and from a place of authority, only to be completely contradicted by the on field ref and VAR immediately after she’s just said it.

A terrible idea from ITV and I hope they don’t continue with it.

She's correctly called every single VAR decision, either way, I've seen except for the England penalty.

And her view there was that it wasn't a clear and obvious error (which pre-supposes the ref saw the incident properly in the first place. She doesn't have access to the comms between VAR and ref.

If VAR and Ref are in communication and establish the ref hasn't seen something, then they establish a clear error.

Not to mention the VAR didn't make the decision, they referred the ref to a screen to watch it and he made the decision.

So there.

They should have her in the studio.

Maybe have a little box in the corner that pops up with her when she has to make a contribution.

I'm with Ian on this one, I think she's actually been quite a good addition and last night was the first one I'd seen where she'd got it "wrong". But then I don't suppose any of us were expecting that to be given as a penalty in all honesty, so I don't have a problem with her not expecting the VAR referral.

Ditto. Her record in all the decisions I've seen has been near-perfect, and yesterday was a weird one, because (as above) it clearly wasn't a clear and obvious error, and that's a subjective thing. She also describes the situations calmly, clearly and concisely, which is a real novelty for anyone on ITV football.

She handled that handball one superbly with the ex pros all whinging.

She was just, this is the law. This is the reason for the law and how its interpreted. VAR got it right based on that. Issues like this influence how the laws are changed. And they're written by FIFA in consultation with Refs, Managers and Players. I'm giving my professional opinion, my personal one may be different but that's not why I'm here.

Smashed it.

Low blow. Can’t handle being wrong on the penalty you need to resort to name calling? Outrageous.

Much prefer the minor input from the American lady to the inane and far too many comments of the two pundits.

Oh for the days of Ken Wolstenhome, Brian Moore and Barry Davies who didn't need any helpers during the game as they said enough and didn't feel the need to talk constantly.

Perhaps some of the commentators should take a Richie Benaud (RIP) course in learning that little is often better than more-it is after all on TV and we can see for ourselves what is happening so a radio-style commentary is unnecessary.
