Brum Royal Enjoyed the game last night, could have been a few more goals. I think Spain will beat whomever gets through tonight though.

From a GK perspective, I thought Simon could have done better with the French goal, seemed to give up on it early, but with a dive could probably have got there.

Goalkeeper analysis is difficult because you know what is going to happen, which the keeper doesn't

i.e. you know it was going to his left, he doesn't

That is true, but I'm a keeper myself, so I look at it from the perspective of what I would have done in that position. The behind the goal footage of the goal shows Simon gives up on the ball as the cross gets to the striker to head it, whereas if he'd continued his momentum and dived he'd have had a chance to have made the save. He might not have saved it, but he'd have got closer to it than by not moving and watching it go in.

This applies more to the Swiss goalie for Saka’s equaliser. It was superbly placed and went in off a post, but the goalie sinks to his knees and makes no attempt,

Again you know what happens. This is a common problem when evaluating any stochastic process

Comes through a load of traffic. If the goalkeeper doesn't see the player shape up to hit it, it's difficult to process the direction, speed, of the ball, etc in the time it takes the ball to travel past the goalkeeper.

The French goal can go in effectively three directions relative to the keeper:

- left
- straight
- right

By the time he's evaluated, he's already behind...depends on where the balance of his weight is, etc etc etc.

Yeah I think the Swiss keeper is blinded by the ball coming through a lot of players and is very late seeing it

Exactly! It's like a boxer throwing a jab from the hip, you don't see any shoulder movement until it hits you

Stat from Twitter

Colin Millar Since May 2001, Spanish teams have played non-Spanish teams in 22 major finals (Champions League, Europa League, World Cup and Euros). The Spanish side has won all 22 finals.

Haven't noticed so many flags on houses or cars this time round. I have wondered if we'd lost interest a bit, but clearly not in Bermondsey...

They are very Roman Catholic tbf.

Surprised Vatican City don’t win more tournaments. Probably trying to give everyone else a chance.

I’ve been lighting candles after mass for the England team.

It worked against Slovakia and England equalised in the fifth minute of added time.

It seems though that the man who created the entire universe and everything in it, with all his power, even he is unable to get England through the last game of an international tournament.

The last 5 have now been won by catholic countries so will he stop the hurt for us next time?
Will 5 hail marys do the trick?

Trouble is there's probably a myriad of others doing it for the opponents too.....

Since Southgate took over the players and staff have always sung the National Anthem with great and exaggerated gusto.

Perhaps they use up too much energy doing this and should consider doing a Spain and not singing although I understand that Spain's is not one now where there are words, it's just a marching tune.

Exactly. We need to get more English people to be Catholic. Then we are certain to win a tournament. It’s a numbers game, that’s why Brazil do so well.

Just looking back at an article written a week before the tournament the writer highlighted 5 young players to look out for as follows:-
Yamal
Guler
Simons
Wirtz
Barcola

All did of course make a significant impact apart from Barcola who didn't get much game time.
