I think it's reasonable to want someone English to manage England, it is the national side after all. That, of course, doesn’t mean one needs to have a xenophobic reaction to someone of another nationality being appointed.

It's a sad sign of how far our nation has regressed, that something seen as completely normal and accepted pushing towards 20 years ago with the likes of Ericsson and Capello now prompts xenophobic diatribes. Why anyone would want to take England back to 70s attitudes is beyond me, but that's where we seem to be unfortunately. And heading ever on back to the stone age.

Doesn't help the "buy in" that Capello and Ericsson were overall failures though. Personally would prefer an English/British manager but there aren't any out there that are really up to the job (and haven't been for ages but then that's a real issue with leading PL clubs chasing £££££ and not investing in the time managers from these shores need to develop, there must be great talent out there somewhere, it wouldn't suddenly just stop). At the end of the day Thomas is the best England could currently get, so who cares where he comes from?

Southgate is arguably our most successful manager, no trophy but multiple finals, certainly 2nd best, and yet his club record was nothing to cry home about.

Just because Howe and co haven't won the Premier League with moneybags FC doesn't mean they aren't up to the job.

Ericsson didn't really do a bad job. Better than Taylor, Hodgson et al.

I don't know how the stats have changed - maybe a homework exercise - but when I was doing my FA coaching badges, Germany had approximately ten times the number of qualified coaches at every level.

With the addition of Harwood-Bellis and Jones, there are eight of Carsley's U21 European champions in the latest England squad - albeit I think maybe Gomes, Palmer, Colwill and Jones will be the one that Tuchel keeps on.

The FA really screwed all this up, they knew Southgate would be likely to leave in the summer but instead of lining Tuchel up to immediately step in they went for this pointless experiment. But then that’s what FA’s do.

I mean, by all means bring Carsley in for the immediate future, not least since we had Nations League games on the schedule. But as soon as Tuchel was agreed he should have started.

Injuries are what they are - like Trent's - but I don't think the squad would have seen nine players drop out if this was Tuchel's first game in charge. However well thought of Carsley is in the England setup, I'm not sure the players have bought in.

In fairness, they were saying that it might be because of Kane's fitness rather than an experiment.

I know that progression from the U21s is something to be encouraged (not for management though) but I feel that Carsley has gone a bit full-on with the idea when there are others who have been waiting in the wings and might be better options for a game that matters when it comes to seeding for the big tournaments.

All we have lacked in recent tournaments is a coach able to spot issues during a game and make tactical/personnel changes to influence the game. We now have one. Trouble is, he might have fallen out with everyone before we even kick off.
