Thought 2022 was fairly obvious there was no serious pretence, certainly after the first few months anyway.

A bit like the Olympics, I think it'll eventually be dictated by which countries/FAs can actually afford what is now FIFA's ridiculously bloated cash cow.
I'm not talking selling hosting rights. I'm talking actual places.

Errr... :?

One of the same, are they not?
Given you have to host a game to be hosts, not entirely

Having already expanded the tournament from 32 to 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup, Fifa are now discussing whether to expand World Cup 2030 to 64 teams

Talk about removing all risk of anyone even remotely “big” from qualifying. Most qualifying now is utterly pointless for the top teams in Europe so why not make it that way for half of the continent then! And will they even need to have qualifying in South America at all?

It’s getting like the disgusting Olympics, far too big a burden for any country that doesn’t want to be bankrupted to take it on, even if they had enough stadia etc. but then that allows for more ****** stupid multi country/continent idiocies like 2030 is already.

All done for FIFA to be able to grab even £££££ of course through their “commercial requirements”.

At least we can be thankful that England/Britain still wouldn’t be allowed to host it.

In 2 minds on this;

1. Yes, more teams dilutes the tournament and asks more demands from players, who already have a large schedule.
2. More football = good. The days where there were 4 games during the Qatar WC were class.

Rather than a bigger world cup, I would rather see a pre world cup tournament happen for all the nearly teams.

Your Finland's and Bulgaria's taking on your Paraguay's, Bolivia's, Angola's, North Korea's and South Africa's to see who gets the extra spaces in the next world cup

Yes, absolutely agree with this idea.

Disagree. World cups where you could watch pretty much every game were great. Finding plucky under dogs to follow, working out which of the favourite teams looked good for it, who would be a dark horse.

There's way too many games to watch as it is now.

It'll just lead to more cricket scores and no hopers. And less chance for a surprise deep run.

I'm not sureI can be bothered to watch another world cup at all at this point. Its all overt corruption, sportswashing and greed. There's zero integrity.

There's an old article in the Blizzard came up with a solid 48 team WC based around a prequalifying group stage.

IIRC, 16 groups of three, that play H and A in the build up, top sixteen sides kept apart at this stage. Then the Group Winners go through to a straight knock out from 16 at the finals. Easily make it Top 2, could easily make it groups of four (64 teams) and the top two go through, so round of 32. Main bit was that the group stage was H&A.
