Did you see who scored for Ireland in their 1-1 draw with Costa Rica?

soggy biscuit Q. heard 2 Brazilians in the past week talk through their team while giving a preview of the WC. Why do they pronounce Fernandinho's name as 'Fernangino'?

Don't know if you're really interested, however when the d in Brazilian Portuguese is followed by an a, e or i, in the most common form of the Brazilian accent they tend to soften it sound like our g.

As to why they do this, I can only guess, however it is probably to try and differentiate themselves from the Portuguese from Portugal, which sounds like an asthmatic dog choking to death on an asthmatic cat.

Please stop when this starts getting boring, however it is a subject that I actually like, so I can go on.

The main difference for me is pronunciation, with Portuguese from Brazil being much more "how yer doing", by that I mean much more relaxed, they speak with their mouths more open and with almost a slur as they let the sounds flow into each other. Portuguese from Portugal, and by extension, the other smaller ex-colonies, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Angola, is much more clipped and, in my opinion, severe sounding.

Another big difference is obviously vocabulary, however even in Brazil, being a continentally sized country, vocabulary can vary massively. Another interesting difference is actually grammatical. Portuguese from Portugal doesn't like the progressive structure so much, and they don't use the gerund as much as Brazilians. However it's interesting if you look at the written language because in both languages it is more similar to Portuguese from Portugal. I can only surmise that in Portugal they speak what is considered to be classic and academic Portuguese, whereas in Brazil it has evolved to be simpler whilst speaking. This is interesting in the context of massive illiteracy rates in Brazil.

BBC However, there seems to be no doubt about his availability for Saturday's World Cup opener against Italy.

Englands world cup top scorers in the last 32 years (cba to look back further)

1982 - Robson, Francis 2
1986 - Lineker 6
1990 - Lineker 4
1998 -Shearer, Owen 2
2002 - Owen 2
2006 - Gerrard 2
2010 - Gerrard, Defoe, Upson 1

aside from Lineker we have had no one score more than 2 goals in a world cup in that time Lol.

gerrard could be our top scorer 3 world cups in a row

Don't expect to see Rooney topping the 2014 list.

Spain '82 was the first time we'd qualified for the WC since Mexico '70 so you'd be forgiven for not going that far back! I think Hurst, Peters, Clarke & maybe one or two others got one goal each in that tournament, certainly no one got more than one.

Royalclapper Group B is looking more and more fascinating as the World Cup approaches, certainly as an alternative to the England discussions.

Spain
Holland
Chile
Australia

Chile's shit-or-bust attitude is going to force some issues here I reckon. If they manage to get through the group it's obviously going to mean a big name casualty goes home early.

The Dutch do look well shy of some of their previously better squads. A Holland win over Spain though and the unthinkable is on regarding Spain going out in the group stages, Chile could of course implode but they looked a decent outfit when they turned us over at Wembley. The Aussies are surely only there for the lolz once they'd seen the draw.

2 Spanish friends both said that they are going to be pretty much reliant on Pedro having a great world cup otherwise they will not do well. Apparently there is quite a pessimistic feeling in Spain

Pessimistic here in Holland too.
