Back from the game:

Spain were awful, Chile were excellent. Great scenes during and after the game, chile fans were sensational, Spain's fans were nonexistent. A bunch of flamenguistas tried to start singing and we're quickly put in their place by the Chile massive. Only complaint has to be that my father in law had his ticket stolen before the game, and while we were waiting outside we saw a small group of Chile fans trying to force their way into the stadium, as well as a Chilean who stole a Brazilians ticket in the line, he then jumped all the railings and tried to escape through the crowd. Luckily a few Brazilians grabbed him and apprehended him before the police turned up and took him away to give him a savage beating in a dark alley. Didn't think much of it at the time, but after seeing what happened in the stadium, it's a little poor.

Libertine I have nothing against Spain or Spanish people per se. But the attitude they hold that they are the only ones playing the game the way it should be played, a "beautiful game", is so full of itself, almost as much as they are full of themselves, that I can't help be anything but happy their arrogance just got kicked squarely in the nuts. Football should be played with passion and not just be an exercise in geometry.

Is that their attitude or is that your perception of them because they won so much in the last 6 years?

How many teams sat in their own half, challenging Spain to break them down and allowing the Spanish to have the possession they had? Those teams were doing what they thought they needed to do to win and fair play to them but it means that the Spanish had to what they needed to do to win as well.

2 world wars, 1 world cup Total neutral watching the game but I can't help feeling for Spain.

Casillas in awful form, the whole team screwed up.

Fair play to Chile, but it still doesn't explain why they have such a silly shaped country.

Casillas was dreadful, he has played his last international for sure.

Given that he's the captain, I think he'll play in the match against Aussie.

He'll then, probably, retire from international football.

You're right, I had forgotten they still have a game to play. Since the Aussies also can't qualify it seems a pointless match.

This^^^^^^

I always found the Spanish pinpoint pass accurary fascinating but as Holland showed, the way to beat them was to by pass the midfield entirely. Why had no one tried that before?

SLAMMED 'greed. Not sure why people are calling it the "end of an era". They were just knocked out of a tournament by better teams.

for the last 6 years there have been no better teams. thats a long time to be brilliant, and so could be called an era
im just hoping their style of football has been superceded. much happier watching fast flowing attacking football like chiles.
its like high speed tika taka, with added pace and power, the ability to run all night long, and cavalier attitude.
and that>>>>>>>>>>>>>>turgidly passing it into the net

End of an era, IMO

The greatest international side of my lifetime absolutely humbled without so much as a whimper. Worst defence of the World Cup title since France's awful displays in 2002.

They may well be back. Nothing lasts for ever. Their dominance or their miserable failure. Their tactics and performances were an absolute shambles and it's always great seeing the holders of the tournament get knocked out in the first round.

I intensely dislike their brand of football. It's duller than kicking the opposition into losing and playing Wimbledon style hoofball. It's bonkers having sandman defend it here given how he constantly blasts any attempt to promote a system to retain possession and play any sort of passing football, let alone tika-taka, on TB. But then he is clearly a mental.

I’m no massive fan of the Spanish approach as a spectacle, but this is a crazy st8ment.

You know it’s particular nonsense when you start thinking sandman’s stance is more reasonable.
