Euro 2028 host bidding

by Winston Biscuit » 07 Feb 2022 14:33

6 weeks left for nations to get their bids in for this and right now there are 3 who have submitted their bid:

1. Turkey

2. Joint Bid - Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia

3. Joint bid - England, Scotland, Wales, N Ireland, Rep of Ireland

Russia, Italy, Portal & Spain, and a Joint Nordic bid have been discussed but not submitted as of yet.

I do like the sound of the joint Nordic bid, especially if they can get it across 6 countries instead of just 4.

Are all host countries in a joint bid guaranteed a place at the finals?

a chat between some nordic folk on the UEFA requirements and the likely stadiums to be used if they bid
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nordiccountrie ... d_for_the/

Basically in the 4 main nations they already have the stadiums, maybe some would need expanding. Its getting Iceland & Faroe Islands to host matches that would need most work.

one of them raises a good point on taking part. Why would one of these nations want to spend money on doing up stadiums if they were not going to compete in the tournament? yet why would UEFA want 6 teams to be automatically entered into it? (especially Faroes! )

Would give UEFA a good excuse to expend the tournament to 80 teams.

Would favour a Nordic bid. Never been to Scandanavia and it would be a good excuse to go.

The number of joint bids made these days should be ringing loud bells to FIFA and UEFA that the costs of hosting these tournaments are spiralling, and too high. In that sense, the multi-host approach of the last Euros isn't without merit, albeit I appreciate it isn't a great setup for fans of countries that aren't host nations.

It will be UK and Ireland judging by today's article in The Athletic. UEFA view the next 2 tournaments as a chance to capture back lost revenue as a result of the pandemic and on that basis no other country/countries will come close to delivering like the UK/Ireland bid.

Do wonder if the violence at the Euro 2020 final might count against us.

Zero chance. UEFA had the opportunity to strip the FA from hosting the 2024 Champions League final but left it.

By all means go and I'm a bit of a Scandiphile myself - but it's definitely not a #lads and #beers type destination unless you're absolutely minted. And even then, the drinking scene is pretty tame.

You'd have a better time at a football tournament in Eastern Europe, 100%

Russia appears to be taking the piss somewhat, having submitted a late bid to host Euro 2028.

So UK & Ireland in 2028 and Italy in 2032 then?

It would be great to have the Euro's based in the UK, potentially a chance for clubs to bump up their stadiums in order for them to be used during the Euro's and plenty of chance for us England fans to go and see some different games across the country.

In terms of UK & Ireland stadiums, the only issue at the moment will be in Belfast. Current stadium not big enough to host so would never further expansion. Otherwise, that, Aviva, Millenium and Hampden will all be used from the smaller nations and possibly Celtic or Rangers. As for the English stadiums, loads to use. Could be 4 in London alone (Wembley, Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham). Manchester will put forward both stadiums as would Liverpool with Everton's new stadium ready in time. Villa Park is due an expansion as is Leicester so solves the Midlands issues. North East will have Sunderland/Newcastle if required.

Its already got 24 qualifiers from 55 members so why not. 48 team tournament with 16 groups of 3, top 2 proceed to the "Round of 32".

As for the qualifiers, 5 hosts so thats 43 from 50. 10 groups of 5, top 4 qualify. Of the remaining 10, 6 with the best record play off to get the final 3 qualifiers.

Who doesnt want to see Kazakhstan v Malta in a major tournament?

See? It's simple. That will be 5% commission please UEFA for sorting your tournament out.
