Generic England Euro '24 Thread

by BRO_BOT » 26 Jun 2024 17:38

I'm having to jump about it with current threads. Or a conversation about England coincides with another game and it gets a bit messy

Gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and a clean slate for my own sanity. They Won the group so are on the easy side of the draw

The Netherlands have a lot of injuries to key players. We should beat them (if that's who we draw)

I presume you’re somehow going to beat Southgate with the lucky stick now

England do have the chance to reach the semis/final now.

Slovakia will not be easy but they are beatable - then the QF would be either an Italian side who England qualified ahead of or a well drilled but limited Swiss side.

If they get past those then the semi final opponent is one of Romania, Netherlands, Austria or Turkey. Austria are a very decent side but not unbeatable, the other 3 are very beatable indeed.

So England 0 Slovakia 0 - Slovakia win 4-2 on penalties.

Foden has left for the birth of his kid - no indication when he'll be back but you'd assume it won't be too many days.

I think this might be a good thing, though - he and Bellingham seem to me to be very similar players playing in the same position, and I think some of the problems come from that - similar to past managers feeling they had to play both Lampard & Gerrard rather than make the hard decision to pick just one.

I wonder if playing a game without Foden will revitalise the midfield - similar to '86, when Ray Wilkins was sent off with England struggling in the qualifiers, and the forced reshuffle - notably the introduction of Beardsley - suddenly made everything click.

In any case, I'm clinging to the hope that playing teams who attack and leave space behind the will work to England's advantage much more than trying to break down team that park the bus has been.

Breaking news: England's players will not be voting in next week's general election. They are unable to find a box let along put a cross in it.

Expectations for this are yet another dreary game against professional bus drivers and Southgate et al being as much use as a group of cyclists in towing the bus away.

Standard tournament penalty loss incoming.

Whaheyeee!

1st July

Tomorrow’s the day that we see those (so-far, pretty much unseen to-date, this tournament) cross of St George flags on plastic sticks adorning BMWs, white vans and executive cars flying down the motorways and by-roads of Engerland.

“It’s coming home……58 years of hurt, never stopped me dreaming”

Would I like us to win the tournament playing fast free flowing attacking football that blows the opposition away? Yes.
Would I give two shits if we won it by playing like last night and pretty much fluking our way through the tournament? No.

I don't mind fluking it at all. I mind us playing the brand of football we currently are. It literally goes against the main strengths of our great attacking players.

If you look at past tournaments, some terrible teams have won. Portugal in 2016 were dogshit. And in club football, Real Madrid win the Champions League most seasons despite playing like shit throughout. Bellingham has clearly learned from them to only turn up in injury time.

None of the above is remotely true. Educate yourself.

To be fair. Portugal did with the Euros in 2016 after only winning 1 game in normal time.

1-1 v Iceland
0-0 v Austria
3-3 v Hungary

1-0 a.e.t. v Croatia

1-1 a.e.t. (5-3 pens) v Poland

2-0 v Wales

1-0 a.e.t. v France

Doesn't scream great tournament, just very hard to beat.

Its hardly "dogshit" though is it? They had the approach to be hard to beat, worked pretty well.

We don't look hard to beat. In fact for 90 minutes against Slovakia we looked easy to beat

England simply won't win the tournament playing like this.
