Copa Libertadores

by soggy biscuit » 24 May 2008 09:27

Quarter final results:

Boca Juniors (ARG) 5-2 Atlas (MEX)
Sao Paulo (BRA) 2-3 Fluminense (BRA)
San Lorenzo (ARG) 2-2 LDU Quito (ECU) Quito win 5-3 on penalties
Club América (MEX) 2-1 Santos (BRA)

Boca Juniors meet Fluminense and América play Quito in the semi's.

Would be interesting if Boca win as this would mean Tevez playing against them in the Interwank Club Mickey Mouse tournement in Japan

I can't understand why the competition is both devalued by people like yourself, and the european clubs.
Surely its an opportunity to call yourself the best club in the world? The best team from europe and the best team from south america.

The old school one-off game wasn't all that devalued - although the South Americans used to take it a lot more seriously when opportunities to play in Europe were limited and this was their only chance to really show that their league/cup was something.

That mess in 2000 really did for it in terms of UK opinion - United didn't really give a flying and the usual response to English teams being shown up by opposition is to blame the competition rather than the English teams (see also; UEFA cup).

But surely that only stands if you believe that the winners of the CL are truly the best in Europe at that time. Man Utd probably are but that certainly hasn't been the case over the past few seasons.
