Oddly enough, with the scale of the upper and lower tiers on the main stand, and the scale of the stadium overall, I was thinking of a certain stadium a little closer to home. True, the roof isn't the same, and our main stand joins up differently, but it does go to show just how similar stadiums are these days.

Wax Jacket it's Derby you're thinking of, with the slope from the main stand to the surrounding stands

Pride Park as the other one I was thinking of, particularly with the slope of the roof but the Riverside swung it for me because of the colour scheme.

I can see where you're coming from with the Mad Stad but the join between the two tier and single tier stands is more seamless at our place. It was the bare concrete wall at the end of the stand that made me think more readily of the Riverside or Pride Park

Portsmouth are set to leave Fratton Park and move to a new 36,000-capacity stadium overlooking Portsmouth harbour.

If the FA Cup holders receive the necessary planning consent, work will start on the new ground next year.

The new stadium, designed by the firm responsible for Beijing's Olympic Stadium, will be on an ex-landfill site by the M275 and M27 motorway junction.

"We only have one word to describe this stadium - perfection," said Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie.

"The club will be playing a big part in the regeneration of the city and our fans will have the very best in terms of facilities and amenities, as well as an excellent viewing experience."

"Portsmouth Football Club has moved into a new era with the backing of owner Alexandre Gaydamak and these are very exciting times for the club, both on and off the field."

The development would include an indoor exhibition centre/arena with a 10,000 capacity, a new diving training facility for the Royal Navy and a residential, retail and leisure complex.

The scheme is being designed by Swiss-based architects Herzog & de Meuron.

In addition to the Olympic Stadium, commonly known as the "Bird's Nest", they also designed the Allianz Arena football stadium in Munich.
The stadium will sit right on the waterfront by Portsmouth harbour

Portsmouth have been based at Fratton Park since 1898 but have outgrown the ground's 20,200 capacity.

Sellar Property Group, which is handling the development, plans to redevelop the 17-acre Fratton Park site for a mix of low-rise residential and retail usage.

David Williams, chief executive of Portsmouth City Council, said there were still some issues to be resolved before the plan could be given the green light, including access to the new site and the impact of the new retail developments.

But he added: "I think the plans for the new stadium and arena are very exciting, and the stadium in that location would look stunning.

"Whilst it will be for the planning committee to determine the application, the city council will continue to do its utmost to help the club produce a workable and acceptable scheme to achieve a fitting new stadium for the FA Cup holders."

It looks like it'll be just inland from Portsea Island, we won't have to leave mainland Britain to get there. Interesting looking design, bit different from the usual plastic crap.

Large one tier stands are far more effective and impressive than all this two and three tier repetative nonsense. Like that a lot!

Providing they fill it of course.

Which they will.

Because they're massive.

Well, that's the thing. I see Pompey as a club very similar to that of ourselves and so if they can fill that capacity, so can we. Of course we need Premiership football and even European football to aid that crazy opinion of mine.

Rubbish...for the last 15 to 20 years our attendences have been pretty similar.

You could argue that the Fratton Park crowd know how to create a better atmosphere at times, but in terms of actually bums on steats (or feet on terraces) they've not been far from us for a long long time.

We need success to draw in and maintain the interest amongst our supporter base, but which clubs don't?

Albion will be able to play games at Withdean until 2011 after Brighton & Hove Council today approved the club's planning application.

The council's planning committee overwhelming agreed on the matter, voting unanimously 11-0 in favour of the application.

The Seagulls can therefore continue to play home matches at Withdean until the club moves into its new home at Falmer...in the year 2035.

Albion chief-executive Martin Perry was delighted with the council's verdict.

He told seagulls.co.uk, "This is the last time that we're going to have to apply for planning permission at Withdean.

"It secures the future of the club in the short term, and now we can continue to concentrate on delivering the new stadium at Falmer."

The planning application also allows the club to make further improvements to Albion in the Community's adult learning facilities, which are based in the hospitality suite at Withdean.

2011

It's the other 100,000 fans missing out I feel sorry for.
