Dover Athletic

by cmonurz » 29 Dec 2008 15:34

One for the stattos - Dover, currently top of the Ryman Premier, have 60 points from there 23 games played so far :shock: (20 wins and 3 defeats).

I can only find records for league football, does anyone know what the season points record is for non-league football, or for the two tiers below League Two?

At their current rate, Dover will finish with 110 points.

I'll raise you a Leamington FC. Currently top of the Midlands Div 1 (next tier down I think), Played 19, won 17, drawn 2, GF 56, GA 14, 53 out of 57 possible points (and it should have been 55).

My lads play for the Leamington Brakes junior teams that they are linked to, so we go when we have free days. My 9 year old will be leading them on to the pitch with his team mates next week.

... and I'll take your Leamington and raise you a Poole Town currently top of Wessex Premier :(STEP05 - one below Leamington)

P 22 W 21 D 1 L 0 F 75 A 16 GD +59 Pts 64 (out of a possible 66) :wink:

... not sure but unlike the two sides mentioned above - they can't go up using the ground they currently do. (Tatnam Ground - which is currently inside a School!)

I think my lad is keen on getting along to their home match vs Hamble on the 10th Jan - they, by contrast, are rock-bottom of this division with a minus 53 GD.

The manager is a good bloke as well.
IIRC Poole used to be in what is now known as The Conference where neighbours Bournemouth may now be heading so come next season there might only be a few leagues between them.
I once spent a few hours (and a few drinks) with Brian Clough at Poole Town's old ground when he was manager along with Colin Todd,Willie Young and a few others-it was interesting that as you would expect the players and Cloughie were well behaved and the players smartly turned out that night (a pre-season friendly) but the next night there was some serious letting down of hair in the New Forest.

I can't quote chapter and verse, but I'd expect that someone in non-league has managed 118+ points from 46 games somewhere along the line, or say 110+ from 42. The only real reason that it wouldn't have happened would be if there aren't that many 24- or 22-team leagues around. Incidentally, the Ryman Premier is Tier 3, so any record for the "two tiers below League 2" won't be broken by Dover this season whatever happens.

When we broke the Football League record, I did hunt around for teams that had achieved more points, hoping that we could claim an absolute record (and probably a world record, given that foreign leagues tend to be much smaller). However, I unfortunately came across 107 points by Stevenage in 1991 in the Ryman Division 2 North (presumably the equivalent of Tier 4 at the time) - don't know from how many games. After I found that I stopped looking.

Also worthy of note is that Didcot managed 105 from 40 games in 2006 in the Hellenic League Premier Division (Tier 5).

... just 'wafted' my Golden Anorak over the PC and came up with some of the following from the "Plus-100 Club". :wink:
I only went back to 03/04 season [I included the top of the Combined Counties from 02/03 season - mentioned recently on another thread - cos THREE teams from the same division did it that year!] ... and also ignored Northern/Midland/Eastern leagues :oops: cos I haven't been to any of them.

[NOTE Conference National is STEP01]
02/03
STEP 05 Combined Counties League

Withdean 2000 P46 pts 124
AFC Wallingford P46 pts 115
AFC Wimbledon P46 pts 111

03/04
STEP05 Combined Counties League

AFC Wimbledon P46 pts 130 {W 42 D 4 L0 F180 A32}
AFC Wallingford P46 pts 103
Reading Town were 3rd that season on 94 pts :shock:
STEP05 Wessex Premier
Winchester City P42 pts 108 {F151 A35}
Andy Forbes got at least 50 plus goals for them that season, I think
STEP03 Ryman/Isthmian Premier
Canvey Island P46 pts 104

04/05
STEP05 Combined Counties League

Walton Casuals P46 pts 118
noteworthy that season: Histon were Champs of Southern Premier (STEP03) with only 78 points from 42 games

05/06
STEP05 Hellenic Premier

Didcot P40 pts 105
STEP05 Wessex Premier
Winchester City P42 pts 107

06/07
STEP03 Southern Div One SW

Bashley P42 pts 102
STEP04 Isthmian Dive One N
Hornchurch P42 pts 103
STEP05 Spartan South Mids
Edgware P40 pts 102
STEP06 Western Div One ... here they come!
Truro City P42 pts 115 {F185 A 23}
Stuart Yetton scored at least 80 of these I think! :shock:

07/08
STEP05 Combined Counties Premier

Merstham P41 pts 110 didn't manage to finish their season - and the one match they were still to play was against ....... Reading Town :?
STEP05 Wessex Premier
AFC Totton P44 pts 106
VT FC P44 pts 102
STEP05 Western Premier
Truro City P40 pts 103 {F132 A39}

Oh my :shock: Was just thinking of Dover having seen the Reading Town thread (Dover being promoted gives me a good excuse to see Maidenhead play :) - been meaning to go to a Maidenhead away game for a good couple of years now, was going to go to the Bromley-Maidenhead game at the start of 07-08 but ended up bottling it :oops: ).

Anyway...was only wondering the other day what the points record for non-league football was... so cheers for the info provided. Dover finished with 104 points in the end btw. Given how well step 3 promoted teams have done in the last couple of season in Conf S i wouldnt put it past them to win a 3rd consecutive title next year :o

Unfortunately this does deprive us of the funniest EVER football song:

"You dirty nothern bastards" sung by Dover fans in the direction of their friends from Margate.
