I guess it won;t be a mystery to those who made the call, and not sure how it can be classed as a costly 'mistake'....

He's scored goals regularlyat Northampton and Swindon, he MIGHT have helped keep Reading up. He certainly couldn't have done any worse than Doyle, Lita and Long towards the end of last season.

And now as he potentially leaves for over £1million it's money Reading could have possibly had. Selling a young lad for next to nothing when it's clear he has a knack of scoring goals didn't make any sense whatsoever.

Alan Partridge Cox wanted to play, despite only being given 45minutes out of position he still proved he was more capable out on the right than most. Broken record when it comes to Simon cox but why he wasn't ever given a chance is a mystery and a very costly mistake.

Impossible to say if it was a very costly mistake as none of us can say with any certainty that him playing would have kept us up last year.

In fact to say that a letting an untried young player go is a costly error (on the basis of the odd cameo role) is a very bold statement.

Norfolk Royal Did we have a sell on clause?

Would be strange in the extreme if we didn't....

Does that mean if we bought him back, we wouldn't have to pay as much?

This would surely cause a tear in the time space continuum and we would end up owing money to London Irish.
Or we would get him on the cheap. Probably resents not getting a chance at Reading and wouldn't come back here anyway.

I think his goalscoring record and the fact that two Premiership sides are allegedly chasing him at over £1million less than a year after we flogged him on the cheap and he's still only 22 would hint Reading were hasty letting him go. And it was their decision. They could have said no we don't want you to go permanently, happy to loan you till the end of the season then we'll look at it.

I've done this debate to death in all honesty, I personally think it was a big error and the lad as an excellent future. I would much rather see the likes of Cox a local lad who has gone out and proven he can score regularly in the RFC shirt than either Lita and in particular Long.

yes but the fact that Coppell had lita and long ahead of cox even in the turgid times towards relegation suggests that he didnt think he was good enough to warrant a starting place at that time.I dont think you can say it was a mistake to sell him,he obviously wasnt quite good enough while we were in the prem and he wanted games, simple really. Its all swings and roundabouts, we let go of Allaway for nearly half a million and look what happened to him and bought in shorey for 25k and look how that worked for us.

I agree, it's the  that really annoyed me. It looked so patronising, like you'd have to be a complete tard to put it on this board. It's not necessary.

p.s. We have mods for a reason. If they decide this is the wrong board for the thread it's up to them, and posting something like that doesn't make the slightest difference. Let them decide where threads go and post stuff about football.

p.p.s. On the original topic I would have liked to have seen Cox given more of a chance. However circumstances were against him, we had Doyle, Lita, Kitson and Long. He would have had to have been very patient if he wanted his first team chance. For him, I think the move was right, get some first team experiences in the lower leagues and then get your move up to the top once you've impressed down there. Remember he's only 21 now and there's plenty of time for him to prove to us we made a mistake. Saying that, I don't think many of us regret Coppell allowing Henderson and Tyson to move on.

I think a lot of Reading fans will always be asking the question "What if Simon Cox got the chances Shane Long got?" Even half the chances that Shane Long has had for that matter, we would have been able to see if he was up the grade.

loyalroyal4life Cox should of stayed to allow long to go out on loan

That was his fault then....

No it was managements fault not looking at the bigger picture of letting long go out to get games, and cox warming the bench and being the impact sub

The only 2 he really got was 45 mins on the wing in which he showed more promise than pretty much anyone who played right side all season and a game against Lyon....that he scored in.

Thaumagurist - I'm lazy and a n00b but the location of this thread is weakly supported by the fact that I've suggested Cox could return to Reading..... Stop the bullying.

And that there might be a sell on clause... so i second your comment.

Sorry, it's just you see loads of posts like that on here or posts correcting spelling or grammar. They all get to me because they're all utterly pointless and patronising. You were just the one i chose to respond to.

holsgrove breaks a leg yes but the fact that Coppell had lita and long ahead of cox even in the turgid times towards relegation suggests that he didnt think he was good enough to warrant a starting place at that time.

Either that or Coppell got it wrong. He's admitted that it was a mistake to stick with the players who kept letting him down, and I for one think Cox should've had at least a sniff of action to see if he could bring something to the team (you don't always have to be better than the others to spark something off and he was full of confidence and could've been the catalyst to get us a back on track).

holsgrove breaks a leg I dont think you can say it was a mistake to sell him,he obviously wasnt quite good enough while we were in the prem and he wanted games, simple really. Its all swings and roundabouts, we let go of Allaway for nearly half a million and look what happened to him and bought in shorey for 25k and look how that worked for us.

He looked better than a lot of the players ahead of him during the brief chance he did get. I don't see how that translates into obviously not good enough.

Not giving him another chance after such an impressive performance in the cup was the last kick in the teeth that drove him out the door.
