No Fixed Abode Lampard scores 3 penalties in a row.
The laws state that if defenders encroach and the penalty is scored then the goal stands. OK, a few Chelsea encroached a little, but the vast lemming-like waves were all West Ham players - surely the ref should have allowed it. On the other hand the law is on the ref's side:
a player of both the defending team and the attacking team infringe the Laws
of the Game: the kick is retakenYou would have thought he could have used his discretion, but then again the encroachment was so over the top that he might have thought it was time to take a stand. Next move: stop goalkeepers moving forward to save penalties.
While I'm having a mini-rant I'm sick of Grey pontificating on laws he knows nothing about. Chelsea's penalty - maybe a bit soft and Grey and all the others bleating about Upson touching the ball, as well as a few other times every week. THE LAWS SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE BALL:
A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force:kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
trips or attempts to trip an opponent
jumps at an opponent
charges an opponent
strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
pushes an opponent
tackles an opponentNo mention of the ball.
