Aldershot

by floyd__streete » 06 Jan 2010 19:34

In my snow-marooned boredom, I have been looking at football websites (used all the porn up now) and was searching the Aldershot site to see whether they had a home game on FA Cup 4th Round day, y'know just in case we don't win at Anfield (they're at home to Bournemouth). Anyway, I came across this mildly amusing thread on their version of HNA:

http://www.shotsweb.co.uk/mb/viewtopic. ... 64cfdfb82e

On a personal take, I am too young to have ever seen Reading play Aldershot in a competitive fixture but I am aware of the rivalry of old; my dad has only ever been to one pre-season friendly - he can't be bothered with them usually - but so keen was he to revisit The Rec where he had watched RFC several times that he drove us to the 2001 friendly which was most notable for a few surreal incidents of crowd violence :| . I actually have a vague soft-spot for Aldershot personally; their ground is a wondeful old relic, my mother speaks fondly of being taken to games there in the 60s by her granddad and they usually have a fair sprinkling of Reading loaness or old boys/rejects 8) .

LOL at an inhabitant of The Recreation Ground referring to Elm Park as a dump!!!!

Also LOL at their hope that we beat Liverpool in the replay, only to be thrown out for fielding an ineligible player! Haven't they heard of our TightArse's cloth cutting campaign? Absolutely no chance of us taking on any player for him to be ruled ineligible.

They have a big issue with us, I remember meeting a shots fan who said he not only hates RFC but the whole town..went on ranting for about 15 minutes

Aldershot in the 70's were our big rivals. If things don't go well this season, and they go well for Aldershot, their could be a derby next season.

At the age of 27, like a lot of fans from both sides I am not old enough to remember the rivalry. I've only been supporting Reading for 20 years but my uncle, who is to blame for the obsession with RFC, has always said to me that Aldershot were, and still are, the rivals. As a result I grew up holding them in some distain. That said, I didn't see Reading play Swindon for 6 years and actually forgot just how much I dislike them, it took a visit to the County Ground to rekindle that spark. The Aldershot spark has never been truly ignited as I've never seen Reading play them, and it's an annual disappointment that we haven't drawn them in the FA Cup, or since they got to the league, the League Cup. It's something I want to experience. Maybe I should go into the Shots end with a Reading shirt on view and see what reaction I get...

Same with Bournemouth. I live there at the mo, and the locals really have a huge chip on their shoulder. I always get grief when I tell them who I support.

Bournemouth really don't like us.
I think it is a case of envy because for many years they were on a par with us but at least for the past 10 years we have left them behind both on footballing terms and in ground size.
The sad thing for us is that we could well be playing them again next season as well as Swindon and possibly Aldershot.

Bournemouth are a bunch of pussies - charmy army indeed. I always remember Aldershot being our main rivals. I don't think Swindon, Oxford or even Brentford come close to that hatred.

Bournemouth have been looking very poor the last month or so, their wafer thin squad is becoming very stretched. I wouldn't be too surprised to see them slide away in the coming months.

Aldershot also bizarrely have a rivalry with Exeter, and as i follow the Grecians a bit I saw them get beaten by the 'shots 3-2 in 2007. There support was pretty loud but in that kind of dull 'ultra' sort of way. It was a long walk back to the station and the station was full of Aldershot supporting chavs waiting for Exeter fans. Luckily they didn't have the balls to attack any in front of the two coppers on duty at the station.

There was mention on the thread about a song but my memory is hazy these days

It started "tiptoe through the southbank" but I am buggered if I can get anymore.

Any "old uns" care to refresh my memory?

I do have some memories however - I can recall back in the early 70's being rather gobby in the Southbank and a copper (Sgt Lee from Twyford)who knew and disliked me heard my disparaging chanting towards the Aldershot faithfully caught me by the scruff of the neck, marched me into the middle of them and made me repeat the chant saying next time he would leave me there. I seem to remember that the Shots fans were actually housed in the Southbank in the corner nearest the Tilehurst End but this does not ring true with my recollection of other games where the away fans were usually in the Town End.

I haven't seen Bournemouth this season, but I did see them beat Aldershot last season to get out of minus points and I think out of the relegation zone. And yea, that is what I think about Charminster too, although there does seem to be more east European immigrants than ones of the scouse variety these days.

Possibly, but according to their site linked to above it has to do with a cup match at some point.

Aldershot fans are deluled! Reason for a dislike of Exeter was something to do with Aldershot fans being locked out at SJP back in the conference days. Bunch of happy clappers with a drum and werent born the last time we went to Wembley.
