The Wembley Experience

by manny96 » 19 May 2011 11:15

My late Nan used to live only a couple of minutes from Wembley. On cup final day (no matter which teams were playing) my parents, my brother and I would get the train up early to avoid the bulk of the crowds, say hello to the early-arriving fans as we got out at Wembley Park tube. We'd head to my Nan's place and, as we walked past, I would stare longingly up Wembley Way, hoping to one day go there myself. Lunch would be ready when we got to my Nan's and once we'd eaten ourselves silly, we'd turn on the TV and open up the doors to her tiny balcony, whereupon the noise of the stadium would rush in. The cheapest surround-sound money can buy.

I never made it to the old Wembley and although I've been to the new one, it's only been for England friendlies, U21s and extortionate pre-season exercises in pointlessness. I was too young for the Simod Cup and my Dad, being a Spurs fan, didn't have much motivation to go to the Bolton play-off final. Instead in 1995, I received my first real taste of the cruelty that football can dish out in our local. And cried. Whilst not Wembley, the story is the same for Walsall - although the pub was in Norfolk (whilst on a football tour) and the tears were replaced with underage drinking.

The point of this all is to say how delighted I am at the chance to finally go to Wembley with something emotionally invested in the team and the game and am determined to enjoy the day, no matter what. I just wondered what memories others have had of the Wembley experience/ what I can expect or hope for, good or bad? I'm thinking less of the overarching emotions of elation and despair and more of the small details that make up the day.

I've only been to a conference there. Hard to imagine it full of singing football fans when it's almost completely empty in the stadium.

btw noticed that the seats don't seem to line up in places. Looks a bit odd and slapdash.

Well, you aint gonna get to experience that on May 30th either, certainly in the Reading end where the 15,000 regulars will be spread out with 20,000-odd day-trippers making for a muted atmosphere.

OK, let's have just the 15000 regulars at our end, no "day-trippers", just the 15000 and let all the "empty seats" songs rain down on us, coupled with all the piss-taking on every football forum from here to Christendom. How do you get 39000 "regulars" into a 24000 seat stadium evey week anyway?

Christ, Floyd, why don't you just end it all now and do us all a favour?

You're all very touchy, must be PDT. Pre-disappointment tension.
