The only people in favour of it would be those likely to go down. The Americans at Liverpool, Man Utd and Arsenal wouldn't give a toss.

I'd also be slightly wary of how much you read into this. It was a statement put out by someone dead against the idea, suggesting measures to stop it happening. There's no mention of how many want it, just an implication that "the foreign owners" want it.

I'd call scaremongering, with a bit of xenophobia thrown into the mix, as it's something those nasty foreigners want.

The irony is that "foreign" owners can be perfectly ethical and decent and do the best things for the clubs they own, and "English" owners can be utter scumbags who try to drive their clubs out of business.

Inappropriate ownership is a much better way of looking at it than the knee-jerk "foreign = bad"

The Yank thing is just lazy - there's lots of them and Major League Sports don't have relegation - therefore the yank owners in the Prem don't want relegation.

Lazy journalism.

As has been said already, the article linked doesn't even mention American owners.

That was just the OP's take on it.

I really dont see the point of scrapping it........what will the teams down the bottom be playing for, knowing full well they will never be in the "top 4"

The owners who favour it just want to take away the financial risk of relegation, so they know their "investment" is safe. They look at NFL and other American sports and see how that works, and want the same.

But they forget that over there no relegation is coupled with a "draft" - so that the allocation of promising players is used to "level" the playing field. Without that - or something similar - and leaving transfers unregulated and solely down to financial resources, would maintain the status quo - the likes of Bolton and Wigan would scape along the bottom never winning anything.

To be honest, I doubt that Wigan (or QPR or anyone else with less than 20k average gates) would be invited to the party. It's all about maximising revenue, so clubs outside the PL with potential to attract decent crowds -and TV audiences - would be invited - Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Leeds etc. And don't ignore the possibility of Celtic and Rangers being added. If something as radical as no relegation were really going to happen, membership on merit would go straight out of the window.

BTW, I'm pretty sure this was debated 20-odd years ago as part of the plans for the breakway PL.

most of the teams in the PL would in effect be playing friendlies for the majority of the season, now that would really pull in the crowds wouldn`t it.

If the big four - six clubs (Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham) don't like it they can always resign from the Premiership with their places taken by 6 championship clubs.

This change would make premiership more competitive!!

I dont see why it bothers those clubs though - when was the last time any of them were in a relegation battle!?

Mike Parry has said that he wants to stop relegation.

This is the same Mike Parry who also wanted the FA Cup to be seeded so we can have a Man Utd-Chelsea final every season.
