Ascotexgunner FFS how offside was Bentekes goal. The offside rule is becoming a joke now.

Nothing wrong with the law, just its application.

It's quite good for the referees to have such a clear example of the new interpretation of the law. If somebody official now says that Coutinho should have been given offside because he aimed a kick at the ball or made the goalie flinch by his actions, then everybody's understanding will be better.

A couple of years ago, things seemed equally clear: not offside because he didn't play the ball.

Law 11 has actually changed that much (if at all?), rather it's the interpretation of "interfering with an opponent" which has been tinkered with. I have to say i prefer the current approach as while it has more potential for mistakes in officials' application, IMO it is "fairer".

Only two weeks into the season and there have been some shocking decisions so far.

Bournemouths disallowed goal.
Liverpools offside goal
Coq Au van not being sent off for Arsenal for a 2nd yellow
Yaya Toure not getting a 2nd yellow on Sunday

But as people who know anything about football know - it's where you finish at the end of the season.

Why such a simple law is continually being messed about with by FIFA is beyond me.

All the crap about interfering with play v not interfering with play is just ridiculous. The law should be left alone. If a player is in an offside position then it's offside - END OF.

You see, I think the interfering with play thing makes sense. Being in an offside position should not necessarily be a foul. You make a run, ball goes the other side of the pitch, you shouldn't be penalised for that.

But the goal last night? yeah, that were offside.

Disagree. That quite rightly belongs in the dustbin of history along with the other boring defensive plays such as goalkeepers being allowed to handle backpasses.

Did you know that Liverpool haven't won the league since the back pass rule came in.

Simply being in an offside position has not been an offence since 1903, when the concept of 'interfering with play' was introduced.
Anyone wanting to revert to pre 1903 rules needs to expect a rather different form of the game. For a start it was 1907 before offside was limited to the attacking half, before that you could be offside anywhere on the pitch !

So are YOU saying it was the correct decision? Despite everyone else saying it was incorrect...

Ban the offside rule then everyone knows where they are and the game opens up for more goals.

Sorted

I didn't make any reference to a specific decision. No idea about the Liverpool goal as I've not seen it. The concept that just by being on the pitch a player is interfering with play though suggests that there has been some recent change when in fact the law has essentially always required more than a player being in an offside position. How that has been interpreted has varied.

In three games Liverpool have had so far this season...

A perfectly good goal by Bournemouth disallowed.
An offside goal by Benteke given.
An onside goal by Ramsey disallowed.

Looked good last night and decisions going their way. Would be surprised to see them finish outside the top two this season.
