paultheroyal .....

Genuinely hope my 4 year old will follow same passions as your youngest.

..Indeed he's had gentle support and encouragement from me (as of course they all have) - helped that I probably brought him up: (gave up work for 6 years or more to stay at home; since missus earned considerably more than me and we decided we couldn't afford/might not need a nanny.)
Downside to that is he wouldn't eat any fruit or veg between the ages of 18 months and 12! :mrgreen:

He approaches most things with laudable optimism and particularly sports/games. Decided early on (about 7-8) he wanted to try and play football for a team (wasn't stand-out at school at that or Rugby). He knew some of his schoolmates played on weekends, so we arranged to get him to one of the summer/pre-season trials. He joined a wonderful club with teams of all ages/abilities in possession of a great set of coaches - their top standard sides are very closely associated with RFC.

He's never looked back - has bags of enthusiasm - has no allusions as to his ability but has by sheer effort and training turned himself into an invaluable solid defender. Although he does love to go up front on the occasions they let him but has still not quite developed the mobility and is not blessed with pace. It may come with growth (he's nearly 13 now) but he's naturally 'sturdy' as opposed to athletic. This attribute has helped him progress - in school Rugby. He was never much above the 3rds at Junior school but went along to trials at Senior School and his determination to learn and follow instructions stood him out and he was selected - much to his great surprise and delight - for the Firsts. Does mean he has to choose occasionally between that and Football on Sat AM but he's pretty balanced about it.

I've tried to instill in him the importance of a clear head on the field and good organisation and clear communication is as vital as skill and pace - which of course he comes up against all the time. He puts in constantly solid performances in defence - he generally plays over on the left side when he's often up against the oppositions better players too. This gets him noticed week in week out and it's great to see he's rewarded with regular MotM by his coaches and peers and indeed has won the Manager's Effort Awards 2 seasons out of three.

Helps again that his coaches/managers are very controlled and calm - they rarely criticise other than constructively and the boys in his group are genuinely developing together as a unit that all enjoy playing with each other. They now tend to win as many as they lose and their manager's view is, that demonstrates they are playing at the right level - which at a developing age is far more important than winning 12-0 every week.

He's about to start 11-a-side this year - I go along to watch him on occasions which he welcomes - although tend to leave a lot of that to the wife as she likes the social natter with the other parents.
As a very proud dad I offer quiet encouragement and advice from the side lines when I think it might help; though of course the league frown on any form of 'parental coaching'. There are those who rant and rave at their offspring - indeed some of the other teams' coaches are just as unbearable and allow their own passions to run away - constantly badgering the lads - can't be very enjoyable for any of them.

Hope your young 'un is as rewarding for you in pursuing his interests as mine have been. (so far! :? )

Four Of Clubs
Maidenhead United 2-1 Hayes & Yeading Utd - crowd over 500 Magpies up to 5th

A performance representative of Maidenhead's season thus far. Powerful start, strong rearguard action in the second half. Devonshire has signed well and I will be truly amazed if the usual relegation struggle ensues this time around.

Here's the local NL round-up:-FA Vase 1st Qualifying

97 Holmer Green 2-7 {SEVEN} Wellingborough Town
98 Southall 2-1 Bedfont & Feltham
99 Newport Pagnell Town 0-2 AFC Kempston Rovers
100 Wellingborough Whitworths 3-6 Edgware Town
101 Langford 0-3 Bedfont Sports
103 Hillingdon Borough 1-2 Potton United
104 Ampthill Town 1-2 London Tigers
105 Burton Park Wanderers 0-0 Tring Athletic
106 New Bradwell St Peter 2-0 Rushden & Higham United
107 Stotfold 3-1 Bugbrooke St Michaels
108 Hanworth Villa 1-0 Desborough Town

113 Shrivenham 3-2 Reading Town
114 Royal Wootton Bassett Town 1-1 Binfield
Got to this - nice new build on northern outskirts of town. 'Moles' looked like a young team in transition and RWBT are 'finding themselves' a bit too in their new home - had more power and were forcing the game after falling behind to a very early goal. May well have won the tie but were hamstrung slightly by a Red Card shown to their midfield playmaker late on. Binfield were not able to regain initiative even against the ten men - replay at Stubbs Lane tomorrow night (Monday 7th)

116 Thatcham Town 7-0 New College Swindon
117 Abbey Rangers 0-0 Holyport

124 Carterton {SIX} 6-0 Chinnor
125 Ash United 0-2 Windsor

139 Sevenoaks Town 5-0 Horley Town
141 AFC Uckfield Town 1-5 Beckenham Town

Royalist Burnham cut their budget and the manager quits...In September

... odd that just after they've beaten Slough 3-0 away in the B&B Cup AND signed up Ascot free-scoring legend John Bennet - formerly at Marlow. League form is very poor though and the shock exit in the FA Cup to lowly Hook Norton would not have helped Tallentire's cause

Not that many games on around this mid-week - in brief:

Ryman Premier
Farnboro now playing catch-up following an uncertain and much delayed start to their season lost 2-3 at Cherrywood Rd to Staines.

CCLP
Windsor get a 2-2 at Knaphill
Hanworth Villa drop their first points in a draw at Chess 'n Hook
Farnham beaten 1-2 at Babbs Mead by Baggy Lea

Hellenic
Sumas go down 0-3 at home to Ascot
Nomads hold Flackwell to a 2-2 draw tonight (Wed)
Ardley's awful start continues as they are walloped 1-5 at home by Abingdon Utd.

Floodlit Cup ties - Highworth beaten 0-3 by Brackley Saints; Thame bt Milton 4-0; Bracknell's good Cup form continues as they recorded a 4-0 victory over Div 1 Rayners Lane and Thatcham eased past Diddy Reserves 4-2

In the FA Vase replays
On Monday evening 'Moles' lost out in a seven goal thriller to RWBT - I was at this Binfield fought back to level from 2 down but were always vulnerable to the counter - especially down their right flank. Bassett's winner came close to the final minute and spared us all an extra 30 mins or more,

The following night I was at Holyport 1-4 Abbey Rangers. Contest over by HT as Abbey raced into a three goal lead. 'port very disappointing - looked lightweight.

In the Hants Senior Cup ties Eastleigh unsurprisingly got past Cove 3-0 ; whilst Aldershot 'kids' plus a few fringe players edged out Tadley 1-0

Barry Hayles still going, classic.

I remember refereeing Aldershot a few times when they dropped out of the football league.

Think we nearly had a thousand turn up in Hampshire senior cup match against Alresford and it was a match against Chesham in the league I believe where we delayed kick off by half an hour because hundreds of fans descended on the tiny ground with one old lady manning the turnstile via a table and a ice cream carton tub for change!! Tempers were fraught.

paultheroyal Barry Hayles still going, classic.

I remember refereeing Aldershot a few times when they dropped out of the football league.

.... and it was a match against Chesham in the league I believe where we delayed kick off by half an hour because hundreds of fans descended on the tiny ground with one old lady manning the turnstile via a table and a ice cream carton tub for change!! Tempers were fraught.

...not sure that would have been Chesham - Amy Lane is certainly not 'tiny' -

(their ground record is over 5000 for a Cup Tie vs Camb Utd late 70's so well before the Sh!ts would have come to town.)

- had very similar experiences in the early 00s when we watched the 'new ' (AFC) Wimbledon in the Combined Counties - places such as Hartley Wintney and North Greenford made the most of a great pay-day, with four figure crowds BBQs BeerTents etc etc- indeed I think virtually every ground record was broken/re-set that season - and what's more Dons didn't manage to get up in their first season; although they racked up over 100 points, they still only finished third behind Withdean 2000 and AFC Wallingford. :shock:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.....here's yesterday's scores in NL (Note haven't double-checked many of the FA's website results in the Cup - it is quite often completely c%cked - odd results were appearing yesterday - such as VCD 1-1 Didcot (1-0 AET) :roll:
{Note: having some real issues with IE and this site in particular - posting the Review each week now, the browser slowly seizes to a full stop, then repeatedly claims I'm not logged in when I am .... but usually comes back Ok if I refresh a few times then 'submit' :evil: :evil: :evil: - so I will be editing this in stages - so might not be that tidy for a while this AM/PM}
- did manage to escape the family and sneak out to this - well it's only 5' away! Pretty uninspiring performance from Marcus's lads against this season's surprise strugglers. Ex-Poxford legend Kevin Brock resigned as Ardley's manager last week after being battered at home by Abingdon Utd of all people. Really emphasises how far they've sunk - with all due respect to Utd. :? Turned up with the elderly coach/trainer/physio in charge of team affairs and only two subs.
H/I grabbed the three points very late on - free-kick fired in, Ardley CB flicked it over his own KP under pressure. Indeed the big man himself had come on as a very late sub to try and force a win ... and although he was his normally robust self - causing no end of confusion and consternation amidst the Ardley back-four - he actually overstrained and damaged himself - spending the last 10' hobbling about in some discomfort.
...been told most of the Ardley squad from 14-15 have de-camped to Kidlington or Banbury
5 feet away? Pretty neat having a football ground in your back garden.
Oh and re the Windsor Reserves crazy result beating Holyport 1st 11 7-6 (on an afternoon when the 1st team turned in another pretty feeble effort against lowly Chertsey), the Holyport official Twitter account seems to have overstepped the mark by suggesting we played some ringers... Cheeky sods.
..har de har - had me thinking you were serious for a " or two :mrgreen: - H/I definitely the nearest STEP06 and above to me, though Unity @ STEP07 are slightly closer up at Cintra - and I wouldn't really go out of my way to watch them - that would be like watching a game in my own back garden.
Not much NL stuff in the leagues around here during MW - on Tue; new CCL leaders Ashford (Mx) host Farnham; Windsor host CWU in the CCL Premier Cup
There are a few FA Cup replays involving our local sides -
On Monday; Farnboro v Kingstonian
Tuesday: Fleet v Hartley Wintney and Didcot go again vs VCD. On Wed Hungerford go down to Bradford Town nr Bath
MUFC 0 - 2 MUFC
Men against boys last night and all the optimism from the start of the season has all but vanished.
Highlight of the evening was some commuter parking his car up that morning between the dressing room and the pitch, leaving his lights on and failing to return before K.O - forcing the teams to squeeze past it as they came out.
Apparently he turned up some time during the first half and the stewards had to give him a push start
Fantastic :D
Reminds me of the time Windsor played QPR in a friendly and Iain Dowie had his car parked by the changing rooms. There was a fault with the changing room alarms so they kept going off however Dowie wasn't aware of this and spent a good while pressing every button on his car trying to stop the alarm sending windscreen wipers, windows, doors, horns and them finally his own alarm off! :mrgreen:
Can't believe I've not heard that one retold by the old boys on the Chicken Run before!
which reminds me of the game (last season or one before i think) where a misplaced ball smashed Drax's windscreen.
He then spent the rest of the game out the front of the ground on the phone to autoglass
