Winston Biscuit Really hope it's nothing more than a 'we have warned him about his future conduct', and maybe take him off Liverpool games for a while.

I assume it will be a much harder punishment though

There's not really any evidence of wrongdoing or corruption... just that he hates Klopp. I dunno if it really needs more than a warning

With some justification, Liverpool could absolutely suggest that Coote is unable to referee their games with impartiality.

They could extend that to any game that could have an influence on Liverpool's fortunes, which is pretty much every game in the league.

I've a few thoughts on this.

Firstly, he has brought the game into disrepute - but only by videoing it. It would have been the same had he tweeted "I hate Klopp, he's a nonce".

Secondly, I think people are really naieve and frankly a bit stupid, if they think that refs - who are humans believe it or not - don't like and dislike some people more. It's also well justified. I saw from the TV screen just how vile Klopp and other managers are, horrible people.

It's the same as us all saying "I can't stand that client", but you still do your job. If you went and put it on LinkedIn, that's where the issues would start.

Thought. Why not scrap the PGMOL and get together with UEFA to have referees appointed in the top leagues from across Europe so English refs would officiate in France. Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Portugal and Italy etc. while the PL would be officiated by referees from those countries. Should also slowly improve consistency and understanding across Europe.

Okay. sentiment I agree with - but....most of us don't officiate in a business worth tens of millions to the parties involved. We don't make 100 reasonably subjective calls involving those parties over the course of a football match.

I'd also suggest that, whilst people are of course wholly professional at work - in terms of business deals, companies are less likely to work with each other if stakeholders think that the other party is a prick.

I don't think that Coote is 'corrupt' - but there is a difference between being a City fan (for example) and thinking that Jurgen Klopp is 'an arrogant oxf*rd'. It is difficult to think that that doesn't impact Coote's mindset on the field. That being said fwiw, there are plenty of instances of Coote making lenient decisions regarding Liverpool - to counter the obvious examples to the contrary like the Odegaard handball, and Pickford foul. I'll dig out the article I found on it.

 It’s come out when he is employed by them, his own disgusting comments in the video could damage his current employer’s business so rightly he’s been suspended while the whole affair is investigated.

Does Coote have a deathwish, it’s like he’s deliberately trying to get himself thrown out and is doubling down just in case losing all integrity and respect as a ref isn’t enough. Dread to think what the next video will show him doing.

Also must say that Sky don’t exactly help matters with regards to the pressure refs get put under with their analysis and programmes spotlighting their on field failings. They’re human just like players and managers and have the hardest job of all those in the game having to handle fan, player and manager vitriol on top of the damn stupid arse piddling that IFAB keep producing each season in trying to “improve” the game.

Think the drug angle has now sunk him and he’ll be “struck off” for at least the rest of the season in the same way a player would be suspended), what happens after will presumably be dictated by how tenable PGMOL feel he will become.

A real shame this has come out but I should imagine most referees have a strong dislike of most managers.

And the pressures they operate under are extreme (with no right of reply to pathetically unfair criticism levelled at them from all and sundry when all they are trying to do is an impossible job) - I would not be at all surprised if alcohol and substances are a regular depressurising retreat for a good number of refs.

Do you see that problem - of hating managers - as an English thing, RR?

Because I feel like respect of officials in this country, as oppose to when I watch La Liga or Bundesliga, is on a different planet, and not in a good way. And that has fed into attitudes of officials towards clubs.

Only a feeling, but I just don't reckon an uber-professional German referee 'hates' some of the clubs or managers or players he officiates, or at least not in the manner Coote appears to in the video.

As to the videos themselves - hopefully there is no more to it than someone randomly choosing now as a good time to release them, because it's possible of course that Coote was being blackmailed.

The Pickford attack on Van Dijk was refereed by Oliver IIRC.
Your point about respect by officials in other countries has some merit IMHO until we look at the current incumbent at Fenerbahce who is just about the worst of all.
