Rob Earnshaw returns to Cardiff on a free.

Vaguely related-was anybody else not so impressed as our TV commentators by the performances of Jones and Smalling for the U21s?
In each game they just had one player to mark between them and their distribution from the back was about as bad as Matt Mills if not worse.
And yet,the commentators, probably as the players cost so much, were talking about Man Utd's future at centre-back being safe for many years to come.
They also talked up Johnny Evans and Gibson as future star turns but neither have delivered and at least one of them is on his way.

I thought they were pretty damn good to be honest.

Both looked quite comfortable on the ball and were happy to take responsibility for bringing it out and into midfield when we were trying to chase games.

They read the game pretty well and looked to link up well together, covering for any mistakes well and dominanting in the air. They also recovered well from any mistakes. The only criticism I think you could throw their way is that they needed to make too many of those last ditch recovery tackles a bit too often.

As for playing against one up top, with Mancienne playing so poorly in front of them and intelligent runners coming from deep I think that's quite often more difficult to defend against. It's why that had a few of those last ditch tackles too.

I think Utd have a potentially very good pairing on their hands.
