Nice to see you've ignored the English fans in Germany. In the same clip the German coppers do the same, stand back and let it happen, hence no tear gas and baton charges in Germany 2006. Looks like the French Ultras and filth didn't see it the same way.

Actions will spark a reaction yes, and I've no real argument with that, but it's just a bit inconsistent with your approach to the anti-capitalist and anti-austerity marches that start getting a bit out of hand and result in a bit of heavy handed policing.

My main gripe was, in general, that the was very little protection of the innocents, be that in group B, C or D who got caught in the cross fire. The authorities have a duty to look after those people, those visiting UK citizens, and I'd prefer it if the media and people like yourself didn't immediately paint an incorrect picture of events just because of your preconceived and bigoted views.

If I'm honest I can't think of an anti cuts or anti capitalist protest in the last few years where I've had this gripe. The closest is the student stuff where they smashed up Tory HQ (or at least the office housing it) and then hen they tried to get into parliament during the vote. In both those stuff was being smashed and people were violently trying to force their way into parliament. In both cases I supported what the protesters wanted to do, but I wouldn't blame the police for going in mob handed. If as a protester you want to smash stuff up or force your way into parliament, expect a beating. The only gripe I had was with a guy in a wheelchair who was dragged out of it for no apparent reason.

Stan collymore's video of England fans today makes interesting viewing. Hundreds of England fans running around quite obviously looking for Russians to fight, stealing flags, followed by sc asking ' what happened?' 'We were gassed for no reason '

French police have rolled out a water cannon now. From what I have seen tonight the English fans, while drunk and a bit obnoxious, don't deserve the water cannons to be turned on them. They had a "love in/sing off" with the French fans going home after their game. One guy got naked and climbed up a street sign. A lot of singing and drinking. It really does appear tonight, not having anything to do with what happened in the afternoon, the French are policing the English reputation instead of the supporters. I watched the Collymore video from the afternoon and the only person I saw get arrested was a Russian supporter who threw a bottle at the English fans. I guess the English fans are guilty of chasing a few Russians around the streets of Lille.

Sky news had live footage of the events. There were a big mob of England fans in the square with one or two French supporters going up to them with the Tricolour over their shoulders , one big bloke in a red polo shirt was trying to calm things down and a couple of 'brave' lads appeared from the back and kicked the shit out of the French fan(s), it then escalated rather quickly. To say (some) England fans are innocent in all this is wrong.

Of course many innocent fans who are just there having a good time and being a bit boisterous get caught up in it. But unfortunately that comes with the territory of big tournaments like this.

Lille is a great city. I went to see Morrissey there a couple of times, everybody behaving like adults - gigs are the way forward giving an excuse to visit a place, not football.

reporters suggest that 10 Russians in black entered the area, launched flares and bangers at the English and welsh, then ran, leaving the French to tear gas them.

It is a minority of England fans that think they are #lads and cause problems for others. But their levels of belmontery are such that they f*ck things up for the masses.

the few videos going round yesterday of the bar 'attacked; by Russians, in all of them was an england fan in a Rooney shirt with white shorts on and wearing a cap, he was acting like the biggest bellend imaginable, not surprised the Russians kicked off with him on 'our' side

Events like the last week make it crystal clear how the police lies re: Hillsborough survived for decades. People are willing to believe just about anything when it comes to football fans, and the limited few who do act like cunts tar all the others with their shitty, shitty behaviour.

No doubt there are some morons out there, but it also seems clear that it's nowhere near as bad as things are being portrayed - and yet we lap it all up.

The media laps it up. One bloke on TalkSport last night said they were drinking and singing outside a bar and there were about 10 film crews all watching and waiting for something to kick off.
