Seal The more I look at our squad the more I think £6m on Rhodes is a gamble worth taking.

With the money from the new TV deal kicking in next season, this is arguably the most important year in Premier League history to stay up. It can cement us as a top 20 club.

Three top 20 clubs get relegated every year though

Is Rhodes injured? He isn't playing in Huddlesfields Cup match today by the look of it. They are currently 1-0 down.

Thank you smart @rse. There are clubs in the Championship now that have greater resources than us. The point of the post was the new tv deal with cement the haves v have nots. We need / want to be in the former group.

Ian Royal As for Pog vs Rhodes.

I'll take the guy who (trying to factor in wages) will cost half as much and has PL experience, over the guy who's scoring record doesn't even include the Championship.

If Rhodes scores >10 goals by Xmas he might be worth £6m. If he doesn't, there's every chance we won't want him and rightly so, or he'll go for less than £6m.

If Rhodes scores 10 by Xmas he will go for more than £6m, and we will have almost certainly missed the boat.

Is he a free next summer? He hasn't signed a new contract (yet) that has apparently been on offer for over a month.

Ideal I'm sure Rhodes is a good player and all that, but scoring tons of goals in league one isn't proof of anything, Jamie Moralee scored just as many, and he didn't ammount to anyting.
Taking gambles is great, if it is £150K or so, we didn't pay over the odds for Le Fondre, Long or Doyle, but now we are talking about £6M, imagine if he flops, you and the rest of them on here will be fuming about "wasted money" etc.
Unless he can be signed at a more reasonable price, I don't see why we should push the boat out just for this one player who isn't proven at higher level.

In this transfer window, our biggest gamble has been the return of Shorey (big deal). Every so a often a player comes through the divisions and starts being noticed by the big clubs. That player may not always turn into pure quality but, sometimes it does happen. We have 6 new recruits already and we have spent little on transfers. I believe that Rhodes would be a reasonable gamble at the price. We may still have the budget and Church could be on his way. Lets not be too tight-arsed this time in the Prem. Lets live a little! If we spend 6m and Rhodes does not set the Prem alight in his first season, that does'nt mean he will not learn, nor does it mean that he is suddenly worth nothing. All natural goalscorers have value!

No doubting he's a good goal scorer but he could quite easily be this summer's Conor Wickham / the latest Jon Stead etc

For 4 million he would be worth the risk imo.

Shorey is hardly a risk, we know what he can do and he was free.

Maybe McDermott has decided he just doesnt fit in his plans

Don't be silly, we have been after Rhodes for a long time and the only problem has been the fee. If Rhodes was free, he would already be with us!

Because the fact he'd be a free transfer would reduce some of the risk of signing him. It's really not that hard to understand, surely?!

F/ck man, 5 pages of the same people saying the same thing.

Some people think 6m is worth a punt on a player who has potential. Some people don't. Personally, half that would seem about right. Huddersfield don't want to sell, so they have stuck an evaluation on his head that is how much he is worth TO THEM, i.e. they are not interested in selling unless it's silly figures. Is he worth that to anyone else? Probably not.

But 6m would get you players like Long, Sig, Doyle in his prime. While Rhodes is obviously good he has not had seasons in the business end of the league to justify that sort of money and he is only valued at that because Huds don't wanna let the f/cker go.

TSI or not, Reading aren't going to start throwing silly money at unknown quantities so I'd forget this one if I were you guys.

LOL. You'd need another £6m to cover his wages.

Sunderland are bidding £12m for Steven Fletcher, which has been rejected. Whether we like it or not, the market is over inflated.

Difficult to compare the two at this stage of their respective careers, but the only equal level they have both played at is Scot U21:

Fletcher: 5 goals in 7 apps
Rhodes: 8 goals in 8 apps

TheSiege Why Pog vs Rhodes, why not Pog, Rhodes, ALF, Roberts and Hunt as our Prem strikeforce (perhaps with Zaha as the icing on the cake). I really don't get this negativity about a guy who scored 40 goals last season - regardless of the division. Natural-born goalscorers are rare and usually continue their progress at higher levels. The only example I can think of when this did not happen is Steve Bull - but he still played for England!

FWIW...

Top 4 in the Goal scoring Lists of League 1...

2005/6
Sharp, Eastwood, Hayter, Trundle
2006/7
Sharp, Constantine, Porter, Trundle
2007/8
Lambert, Paynter, Beckford, Barnard
2008/9
Lambert, Cox, Fryatt, Beckford
2009/10
Lambert, Paynter, Beckford, Holt
2010/11
Mackail-Smith, Murray, Lambert, Wright-Phillips
2011/12
Rhodes, Evans, Wright-Phillips, Beavon

Some haven't made it to the PL, and only Holt can be termed a success there, but I suspect he'll be a 1 season wonder.

Not in Huddersfield's eyes it doesn't.

For them it's Morrison + Church + £4m = Rhodes.
