Ferris Newcastle make Joey Barton available on a free

A free? How, what, why?

Has been ranting about Newcastle on Twitter all weekend and then said he would announce his future this afternoon on there. The club got in first and booted him out

Didn't he have another year left? At the end of the day that's money you're throwing away.

SSN

Newcastle United have made midfielder Joey Barton available on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has just a year left on his current deal, and he has been unable to agree fresh terms with the club.

Barton has also been left disappointed by the Magpies' transfer policy and has criticised them heavily on his Twitter account.

Now Newcastle have decided that his future does lie away from Tyneside and have made him available on a free transfer.

Barton was due to make an announcement at 4pm on his future, but Newcastle have now confirmed he is free to go.

The England cap joined Newcastle in 2007 from Manchester City and has gone on to make 79 league appearances for the club.

I take that back actually. You'll save more in wages than you'd get in transfer fee I imagine.

Being refused a visa for their pre-season tour of the States (and thus having to travel with the youth team to Holland) can't have helped his cause either.

I'm sure a lower third prem team will snap him up.

Arsenal want him (which also means Spurs will come in and declare their interest too)

Saggy Harry is probably already claiming he is 'down to the bare bones' already

lol - it seems that whatever rumour you read about Arsenal wanting someone, the next day Spurs are suddenly in the hunt too

Say what you want about Barton he is quality. Surely Newcastle could command a fee of around 5 million, why not just say he is available for a transfer? Seems mad to say he is available for free - unless this is some sort of publicity stunt to try and make him apologise and sign a new contract

Good to see Barton quoting Morrissey on Twitter.

He wanted a new contract but Newcastle didn't offer him anything, so it's certainly not gonna be that

Couldn't agree more. Certainly one of the best English midfielders that I have seen.

Some LOL tweets from Barton today

Made to train alone today, how predictable.........

If the club want to put out all these false statements via the Chronicle, then let them do that. Everyone here knows, I speak the truth.....

I also have too much respect for my teammates and the fans, to get in a tit for tat war with them. I have too much self-worth and dignity

Ha ha the inevitable, 2 weeks wages fine has just arrived. Needless to say it shall be appealed forthwith. #kickingamanwhilsthesdownha

How about publicly criticising his employer. Haven't there been cases where employees have been sacked for slagging off their bosses on other social networking sites?

the majority of newcastle fans interviewed about this saga are right behind barton and totally against ashley. you should never speak out about your employer, but there's a lot of unrest at the club again (when isn't there?), and he clearly felt something needed to be said and he appears to echo the supporters views also.
