England fans in Lille just got begging 7 year old to down a whole beer in exchange for some coins.

I saw it, yes. He downed the bottle in five gulps to raucous cheers. Then was handed money. They gave him a cigarette too.

But he threw the cigarette on the ground and stamped it out. The fans looked disappointed.

Events like the last week make it crystal clear how the police lies re: Hillsborough survived for decades. People are willing to believe just about anything when it comes to football fans, and the limited few who do act like cunts tar all the others with their shitty, shitty behaviour.

No doubt there are some morons out there, but it also seems clear that it's nowhere near as bad as things are being portrayed - and yet we lap it all up.

The media laps it up. One bloke on TalkSport last night said they were drinking and singing outside a bar and there were about 10 film crews all watching and waiting for something to kick off.

And it did.

As a neutral in all of this (i.e. not being English) I have not found the behavior of the English fans that out of line. As a result of their reputation they have found themselves as targets for other groups of fans trying to make a name for themselves (cough*cough*cough* the Russians). Sure they have been loud and haven't been the classiest with some of their songs and chants. But from what I have seen reported even though they have behaved provocatively they have not been the ones who have actually started the major incidents. And for the French police to roll out a water cannon, even though they didn't use it, last night because the English fans had congregated in numbers and were having too much of a good time was an overreaction.

No property damage, no wide spread violence against other fans, no reason to claim this bunch of English fans are as bad as some in the past. We are talking about a few dozen out of how many? 20,000, 30,000 people? To me that percentage is what is considered the textbook definition of "statistically inconsequential".

And, tbf, the numbers of England fans out there are larger than most other teams so by the law of averages the size of their associated idiot contingent will also be larger - plus the media have no interest in reporting anything good that England, or any country's fans, may do while out there.

Agreed but no one cares about rugby in that way, it's all jolly hockey sticks and a grand day out for everyone. Not saying that that approach wouldn't be good for football but with the media overkill on the sport that would never happen.
